Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass -- "Whipped Cream"

Post by Old No7 »

Feeling a little nostalgic today...

Wondering if anyone else listened to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass back in the day -- especially the infamous "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" album. My late father would play that and others in the cellar when we were growing up...

I'll still play my "Best of..." CD once in awhile while I'm reloading. But come to think of it now, I think I really "grew up" when my older brothers first showed me pictures of what was UNDER the whipped cream.

Life-changing moment, that was...

I saw Herb Alpert perform at the Del Mar Fairgrounds the year before last. Looked and sounded great. He was supposed to be there last year but since the entire year was canceled...

Had thought about him and that album in ages! I think I bought the tape reel about 1968 when I lived in Oakland CA. Guess i am getting old that was 53 yeras ago and turning 75 is getting closer day-by-day. Thanks for reminding me of those days....

I used to know what was under the whipped cream but my memory has dimmed a lot. I kinda recall it was fascinating, whatever it was.

That is OK Jim. The girl under that whipped cream has aged, too.

Had that album, and of course "The Lonely Bull." Was just thinking of him the other day.

LOL.

Well, here "she" is in 2012 at age 76......

Herb A Cream 02.jpg

In 2006, New Yorker magazine said of that album photo:
[It] “Fogged the minds of many young men, as they gazed at the… personalized come-hitherhood to the woman staring back…
The inner portion of a bare breast protrudes from the foam... She is licking cream from the index finger of her right hand…
In the virtually porn-less atmosphere of the suburban mid-sixties it was… the pinnacle of allure.”

Sounds about right!

The album, released in 1965, spent 141 weeks on Billboard’s Top 40 albums chart.

Gee, now I feel OLD...

In the 70s, I often saw more skin being shown by just about any girl walking anywhere on a warm day.

I've got that album on the shelf. Came from my grandparents, which makes me laugh thinking about it.

I started to play the trumpet in 1967. In 68 my mom took me to Columbus to a big department store that had a record department. I bought the album and took it home and played all afternoon. When my dad got home I showed him the album cover, he walked over to my mom and asked her if she had looked at the cover. She said no, then said ohhhhh. I hadn't looked at the cover either, and at 11 I didn't really care.

My dad had an Alpert LP which I liked. As a teen, I checked out from the library their copy of Whipped Cream. I rather liked that cover.

If you ever stop in Cooke City Montana and eat in the Beartooth Cafe, that album cover along with a lot of others from that vintage is on the bathroom wall.... Great Album Cover!

I grew up on all his albums in the 60s, it seemed we always had one of his on the stereo,... and have continued to enjoy those to this day. In addition to Whipped Cream, Lonely Bull and the other major hits, the tune Casino Royale was one of my favorites as was Got A Lot of Livin To Do. Check them out. TJB was just the start. While those days are still what most people associate him with, Alpert has continued to have a very prolific career on his own – jazz or jazz-y – and producing for many other notables, proving himself as talented with his ears and his sensibility for recognizing and nurturing others' talents as he was with his pursed lips and fingers on his trumpet. I believe he was one of the starting members of the A&M record group.

I was playing trumpet back then, I loved that record. I think my favorite song was tangerine.

Despite the album cover, there had to be good music on the album back then. Lack of talent does not last like that. I miss those days when talent was the true driving force. Look at what passes for music now. Untalented jerks trying to have sex on stage.

Only somebody with a slutty mind saw that Whip Cream album as "slutty". Bathing suits show more than that.

Actually googled it and it turned out she had a bikini on with the straps pulled down. I guess smut is in the mind of the beholder.
