.401 WSL ammo question

Post by 3leggedturtle »

How long was this ammo loaded? What year was it dropped? Can I only find that the rifles were stopped being produced in 1936.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

COTW says only that it was still loaded "until some time after WWII.."

I was still buying it off the shelf at local gun shops mid 1970's but it was starting to get hard to find.

I shoot the .351 SL. Winchester in the Model 1907 Self Loading rifle. The last time I purchased new ammunition for that rifle I bought it from Load-X Ammo in Santa Rosa California. They also offered the .401 at that time as well. The headstamp reads Jamison with the proper caliber. I get a bit nervous owning any ammunition converted from another caliber. For example, you can make acceptable .351 using .357 Max Brass, but I just don't like the headstamp to be labeled with a different caliber. While I may know that those cartridges are .351SL and not .357 Max, others that come after me may not.

Sorry for more info than you needed. If you are looking for .401SL, try Load-X.

Hell, I saw a stack of boxes of .22 Remington Jet ammo earlier this week.

You never know when some old stock shows up somewhere.

Scott, with most of the shelves empty it's easy to spot the oddball stuff that was just hard to see before.

Thanks, know how to make them and have 2 sets of.401 dies, just curious how long W-W or R-P produced them. Got one that is made in 1911, i swear it weighs 9.5lbs.

Todd, for gosh sakes put up a Youtube when you get ammo loaded and can shoot your Winchester. I, too, briefly owned a .351 and it was an honor to shoot the thing. I bought it from a gun shop owner in Redmond, Oregon, who also had one in .401 that he would not part with. I believe Earl shot my .351 as well.

Actually, that's not what happened. In order to get any ammo at all into the store, they had to purchase some ammo that they did not need or want. I suppose some distributor thought this was a good way to clear out the warehouse.
