I agree on not wanting to rely on the Swiss Army Knife can opener. They work, but so do you.

.......I have been carrying a couple of those J-0837 military can openers on my key ring, along with one in my 4x4 and one in my hunting back pack....
don't take up any space and work on any cans........ask my wife what saved the ''supper'' when her electric can opener gave up the ghost !!

The only P-38 I ever fired was the military can opener. It worked. Not very easily, but it worked.

Thanks gents, Grizz they were advertised as gasoline stoves but most use white gas or Colman fuel.
They did make a kerosene model i think it was the 111 model that was about twice the size.
Thia stove is self pressurizing ya put your hand on the tank and that would warm it enough to pressurize it for starting then the heat from the stove took over.
Some models did have a pump. :)

Pitchy you definitely have some nice stoves there. I was issued one of the old military stoves that came in a container that you used to cook on the stove top. It had the folding feet. I know I still have it somewhere but havent seen it in quite a few years. Probably in one of the old footlockers I threw all my army stuff in for the grandkids to find one day. It was a multi fuel. Like was stated, the stove kind of sputtered getting it started but once it got hot the fuel went to a vapor and the stove ran great. We used to also get a big can from the chow hall or an ammo can and fill it about half full with dirt and then pour a mixture of half diesel and half gasoline in it to where the dirt was good and wet. You could lite it and then when it got to burning all the fuel off the top you took your bayonet and just stirred the dirt and it would start up again.

this is what my kerosene camp/boat stove looks like. i also carry a couple of single burner propane stoves as spares. use them on car trips to make coffee. this brass one is made in india, where they have good copies of the originals, and spare parts. it starts with a dash of alcohol in the lower ring to heat up the burner, but waving a torch around it works fine and is less obnoxious than alcohol. kerosene burns hot and is less dangerous than gasoline or alcohol in a boat.

for cowboy or pour-over coffee waving the torch around the canteen cup works just as well and is much the fastest way to heat water.

Grizz, what brand is that kerosene stove? It looks useful for lots of things.

As far as the old G.I. canteen cup, they could be warmed over just about anything that would make a fire. Simple and effective.

brand is butterfly. i think there are probably tens of millions of these in use around the world, or the asia portion of it. they will run on jet fuel and maybe paint thinner.

i was playing with the numbers this morning and if i did it correctly, then 18 gallons should run the stove an hour per day for 200 days. i think. (   )

i found a couple other styles in india, but don't want to buy 200 of them. looking at this, it looks like i could construct one fairly easily that would be far more stable on the bounding main . . .
Screenshot (1597).png
i have a spare burner assembly, i see it just sits on a fuel rail, so easy to jig one together.

i like this one better i think. easier to gimbal. a small freon tank would make a good fuel tank. they are very low pressure.
Screenshot (1594).png
the pump is primitive and would be easy to make. in fact, this one would be easy to fabricate from scratch. you can buy that burner assembly from stpaul. come to that, i've seen those burners fabricated from coiled copper tubing. i guess i have to open another project folder under the topic "JETFUELSTOVEs"

as if i don't already have plenty of projects. oh, wait one, yeah, that's why i bought the butterfly. [lol]

I have a 1950 model that I 'acquired' before leaving the Army in 1993. In the Australian Army they were mainly used by armour and were included in both the Centurion Tank and M113A1 CES (Complete Equipment Schedules) along with the Cook-Set Field, Three Piece. The stoves were called 'choofers' by users, a good bit of kit.

They give off about the same light as a 40-60 light bulb, it`s not even half way turned up in the picture.
They are real picky about getting the wick trimmed right and a clean fuel.

Not sure about that one Grizz, they recommend Aladdin lamp oil or 1-k kerosene which is what i`m using now.
The idea is to get a smooth blue flame but the Kerosene doesn`t seem to do that as well.

Then let it warm up ten minutes and hope for a bright light.

I remember before REC that my aunts and uncles who lived out in the country with no electricity would have one Aladin lamp to read by. Like you said, puts out a light about like a 60 Watt bulb. Best you could get as far as I know.

Thanks Ron, they are bright compared to other lamps but mantles run 20 bucks and are fragile and harder to get running just right imo anyway.
The center draft lamp is the best imo. :)

Pays to look at the local thrift store, bought a nice center draft for 10.00 bucks and after a good cleaning and polish she`s a beauty.
The one on the right is a Aladdin center draft which i haven`t heard of so will have to research it. :)

Love to see all your tinkering, Lenn. I am pretty sold on that German ratchet can opener. 8)

THANKS! I never knew that center draft lamps exist! learn something interesting every day. i agree about lamps that use mantles, too fragile for me, i wouldn't feel good about hoisting one to the masthead for an anchor light . . . or drying out my socks either. :)

I read up a little on those center draft lamps. Seems that in WWII a bunch of them were converted to electric lightand the extra brass was put into being merted down to use in the war effort.
My Grandmother on my Dad's side had some Tiffany lamps that were conversions to electric from oil burning. My guess is that they had been the round wick type because they were actually Tiffany lamps. I do not know which relative ended up with those.
