.32 Special...With a compass in the stock

Post by Oldncrusty »

Curious as to whether this was a popular mod at one time. Anyone else have one or seen one? I'm sure it's not factory. I'm guessing the Red Ryder was the influence. This is a 52 model 94. Compass doesn't work, but maybe I can find a replacement.

Good looking rifle. I do not know about putting a compass in the stock.

Back in the day, Herter's hunters compass was sold as a stock mounted compass.

The Herters compass was included in early USAF survival kits for flight crews, I believe was in use in WW2 in bail out kits then for escape and evasion.

Have seen quite a few of those on vintage rifles that were used for deer hunting in Maine back between WW's I and II.

Cool. I hadn't thought about a military connection.

For some reason, I was actually thinking it might be a Maine thing. Thanks.

So the iron in the firearm doesn't throw the compass reading off? I was always taught not to have large pieces of magnetic metal near a compass when taking a bearing.

From what I've seen; not when it's a small compass, set back in the buttstock.

I'll take that as a complement!

But it could apply to Michigan, Pennsylvania, Vermont....

It looks like the stock mounted compass that was sold for many years by the Poly-Choke company.

Been my experience too. I've seen many fine old Winchesters with them.
I bought a 92 src one time from an old family friend who was dying. He also had a nice 64, but, you guessed it. He seemed to think it was the bee's knees, however.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

I've occasionally seen old guns with stock mounted compasses. But sometimes where they were mounted made me scratch my head wondering how the hunter used them if needed? Like this one being on the bottom side, where the hunter needs to turn the gun over, and slightly elevate the muzzle to get the compass level?
I always thought if a guy wanted one he'd put it in the side of the stock, on the off side, so he could simply roll the gun 90degrees to check direction.

Not many places to hunt deer where I grew up. It was mostly shotguns out there.

I have three with the little compass one one the side and two in the comb. I checked them against a good compass and they work fine.
