Plated vs jacketed

Post by 4t5 »

what are the drawbacks of using a plated bullet vs a jacketed bullet?
I want to try some in a 38 spl. or 357 at low to mid range velocities, and have no experience with Plated bullets.

Plated usually do not have as hard or tough of an outer coating as jacketed --- but that is not true in every instance. If the manufacturer gives information on expansion or velocities that it is meant to be used at, that will help. A tight roll crimp has been known to cut the plating on the plated bullets.

I have found that trying to use one die to seat and crimp makes it real easy to cut the plating! I bought a taper crimp and seat and crimp in two separate stages. I believe that they are good to about 1000 fps. But a quick call to the manufacturer will give you a more concrete answer. I use them if I am playing with a compensated or suppressed 45 to avoid leading or lube build up ( not in the barrel ). Other wise I shoot mostly cast bullets in my sidearms and some rifles. The high velocity I leave to the jacketed stuff

I've loaded and shot a fair amount of plated in .38/.357 and 45acp. I drive a .357 at 900fps from a 4" revolver. Same load is 1350 in a 20" carbine. I've had no issues.
As Bronco said, the most critical part is the crimp. Have to be careful not to overdo it.

Been shooting Berry Bullets for close to 10 years. I found that a taper crimp die works best.

Been shooting alot of Berrys, especially lately. I think they are good to about 1200 or so. I cut a very slight bevel on the inside case mouth and with a little bell I've had no issues.

X-Treme plated bullets are rated to 1500 fps. I have used thousands of them in 6 different pistol calibers and found them very accurate. I also use a taper crimp die with plated bullets and seat and final crimp in separate operations. They have a web site for ordering and and have many calibers in stock.
