Old Remington 722 in 222

Post by JOG »

I've always liked the old Remington bolt action's. Being a lefty is tough to find vintage bolt actions. Remington Winchester and Savage started putting out a few in the 1980's. About two year's ago I was looking around at my local gun shop when I came across a very interesting firearm It was a 1953 Remington 722 in 222. It had a custom conversion to a left handed bolt. The barrel was replaced with a 25 inch heavy barrel made by Gartman. The stock has some very nice tiger stripes on it. After purchasing it for a good price I found a vintage 3x9 Redfield for it. Then I picked up some Hornady Superformance Varmint 222 Rem. 50 gr. Vmax. After It had it bore sighted at the gun shop,I took it out to the wood's. I have a rickety old table out under a big old oak tree that I enjoy shooting from. So I dragged my chair out there with a few sandbags for stability. Shooting at about 80 to 85 yard's to see if I could hit paper. The first shot was one inch low right, a few shots later and the bullet's were in a cluster the size of a quarter! It's a bit heavy for lugging into the woods. I'll enjoy this good old Remington 722. It's truly a joy to shoot! Here it is next to my lefty 1990 Remington 700 in 30-06. I just thought I would share this with people who enjoy old school quality! The scope was temporary until I found the old Redfield.

"... It had a custom conversion to a left handed bolt...."

How do they even do that without rebuilding the entire receiver...???

That looks like a well done rifle, had its big brother for years in the 721, they are a nice pre 64 gun

Yes 222 Rem Mag and that case is what BR shooters necked up to make a 6x47 for large bore BR class back in the days before the PPC’s .

You know for what it’s worth I’ve messed with a bunch of 722’s in 222 over the years and just about all of them shot really well with my handloads after I scrubbed the heck out of the bore .

That's really cool!!!

My dad gave me a Sako .222 when I was about 18 and it's still the one of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned. At 100 yds you can put those little 50 gr. bullets, one on top of the other. :D

Blaine,

The .222 Magnum was so similar to the .223 Rem that it has pretty well died off.

I guess the triple deuce was very popular back in the 1960's and 1970's! I really enjoy shooting this tack driver from my makeshift bench. I've always like the Remington 721 and 722's bolt action rifles. I missed out on a left handed Winchester 70 in 300 short mag. a few year's back. At the time I couldn't justifie the high price for a paper puncher! Looking back I wish I had purchased the Winchester. I have never seen one since! Lever's bolts and pump's rule the roost in my neck of the woods!

Been wanting a 722 for ages. They just aren't in my neck of the woods. Havent seen my first one. An occasional 721 pops up and I did luck into an H&H. .222 is an awesome round.

A few folks back where I grew up used the .222 on Prairie Dogs and Jack Rabbits. It was held in high regard for that work.

How about the highly sought after Remington 725! Made from 1958 to 1961. It's basically the same as a 721 or 722 with a hand checkered stock with some extra hand fitting! It came in quite a bit of different calibers. It has a cult following to the hard core Remington collectors. I've only seen one or two in person at a local gun show. Quite a handsome rifle to say the least! They are basically the daddy of the modern 700. Enjoy your weekend gentleman!
