Winchester 1892 small caliber to large caliber conversion

Post by Pat C »

One of my past projects, picked up a parted out small cal. 1892 action. Been working on these rifles for almost three decades but have never done a conversion.
The receivers are the same except mag tube opening , carrier detents, cartridge feed slot internally.

The feed slot is the hardest as I had to take a 5/16 boring bar and turn down center to 1/4 and access through newly enlarged mag tube hole and single point the radius.

I found a well used hacksawed 38WCF octagon barrel , shortened it back to 20" and recut the proper sight and rotary mag tube dovetail.Plus faced and flat polished muzzle.

All parts are original WRA except the buttstock which is a Precision Gunworks shotgun style finished in Gale Lock Antique walnut stain ,followed by John Kay Winchester oil.

Thanks, Next levergun project still in the collecting stages.I've got everything but a barrel and wood.
Plans are to buy a Green Mountain 1.060 blank so I can turn the block for the front sight as part of the blank.
Just turn and profile plus Contour to WRA carbine specs.

This action like the other was a small cal ,and is a saddlering carbine action. Conversion has not been done yet. I have all the large cal parts to build the project.
Just take time to make the barrel,do the conversion.

This will be exact copy of the carbine John Wayne carried in Rio Bravo.

I love the way you left it as finished! It looks like a well maintained rifle that's never been altered!

Thanks, that's the look I was going for.And the very reason its been signed and dated under buttplate as to the conversion. I like to call it original reproduction.

Original 1892 short rifle with special order shotgun buttplate would be pricey ,probably $2K as seen .

Done all this for less than you would buy a Rossi or Similier.

My saddlering project receiver has some pitting and heavy handed action wrench marks I may take out.
Thought about sending it after polish for machine bluing .
Rust blue barrel and mag myself.

Well see

I call them "sympathetic restorations" when I try to retain as much of the original patina as possible. If nobody can tell what I've done, or if anything was done, I consider it a success!

I like that ! I love an as found piece ,the receiver on this one was fairly nice ,few heavy handed screwdrivers scratched it .
Recently there have been an bunch of rifles parted out,I constantly search for good project receivers, barrels, small parts.Buy when there cheap enough.

I'm anxious to start on the saddlering carbine, it will be a lot more involved since I have to make the barrel from scratch. The action on it has some pitting and mars from bubba taking it apart. But should clean up fine.
