Just wondering how well they expand just subsonic. Not a lot of videos on this bullets at 900-1000fps impact.Hornadies expansion charts are optimistically low, they rate the bullets a couple hundred fps lower than reality.

The reason you'll not find any really low-velocity loads with jacketed bullets has nothing to do with expansion but rather the fact that they have a higher coefficient of friction than cast bullets. Go too slow, even just a few FPS, and you risk a bullet sticking in the bore. Don't ever go lower than the starting load shown for the powder you're using.

I can't help with the 158XTP's. But I picked up some Hornady Sub X 30 caliber bullets---Hornady says they will expand at velocities as low as 800 fps. And they do---depending on what medium they hit. In sand from a 30-30 at about 850fps on impact, they had a small mushroom. On a deer at impact velocity of about 950fps, a nice classic mushroom---rib bone on entrance to through shoulder plate on off side.

No help on the 158XTP, but what they publish about their 30 Caliber Sub X is reasonably true.

I do load subsonic jacketed bullets, but you can also load sonic and shoot into the medium at a calculated distance to test the expansion at a certain fps.

If you want to shoot them real slow, use cast....but, like someone pointed out, not TOO slow. I've been shooting 160gr hardcast in my Ruger at about 1000-ish. They are accurate, and useful. I only use BlueDot, so I can't go much lower than that.

What the others have said about sticking bullets is spot on! Having said that, I did my own experiment on 223s using Lee 225-55-rf cast bullets with my own powder of choice (Ba10) and got it down to ONE GRAIN without sticking it in my 223 Wylde 18" barrel! It even went through a empty soup can at 20 yards. Imagine SEVEN THOUSAND loads per pound of powder! :o Now that is cheap shooting!
Just remember if you do try experimenting use the right powder and be prepared to push some bullets out the barrel if they get stuck, and use your head when doing it.
Someone somewhere had a tag the said the firearm isn't yours until you void the warranty.

If it will expand in a 38 snub nose even less than than optimally, I think you will be okay at 950.

Thanks fellas, should be okay to avoid stuck bullets. 900-1000fps is typical speeds for GDHP, golden sabres even remingtons UMC 125 and 158 SJHP in this calibre. All expand at these velocities too, probably the best subsonic options in the calibre. A buddy has some 158XTP he is looking to trade so I might just bite the bullet excusing the pun and give them a try.

thanks 44 shooter, I found another video too at about 1000fps they are opening moderately to about 50cal. Im a subsonic shooter so hence the interest in these. Thanks again all.
