Great read I have most of Samual bakers works saved in print from pre-internet. A while back some big game rifle fans tracked his half pounder shell gun down to where it rests in a British Museum. Its still owned by the family descendants and measurements show it as about an inch bore, or nominally a 4 bore. Meaning the half pound explosive shell must have been a long conical or cylindrical shape. Must have been a frightening gun to fire, sending out explosive payloads from a muzzleloader

Ray, you are quoting from my favorite Baker work. It rests in honor on my bookshelf next to "The Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia" and "The Rifle and the Hound in Ceylon."

I've read every thing of his I could get my hands on - being quite thankful for Kindle which allows me to obtain them at decent cost and zero postage. I'd love to have the print copies, but bookshelf space here is quite limited so am content with the ebooks for now. He was quite a character. "The Rifle And Hound In Ceylon" depicts a fascinating time in that island's history, and the amazing physical shape he must have been in at that time.

If you haven't read it, I'd highly suggest "To The Heart Of The Nile", a biography of Lady Florence Baker, mentioned in various of his books simply as "Lady Baker".

Very interesting read, it reminded me of my time at Westley Richards. Years and years before my time Westley Richards experimented with all sorts of big game cartridges, a lot of old stuff was still just laying around covered in dust.

The weight of the firearms, 13 pounds or more, would have been a real difficulty in holding them to fire.
