Firing the 480 Achilles into a Pile of Rags - added extra photos

Post by JimT »

My neighbor has started learning to powder-coat bullets. He asked if I had any he could practice on. I gave him a handful of bullets for the 480 Achilles and today he made some in John Deere green.

I loaded one with about 2 gr. of Bullseye... then laid a pile of rags on the desk with some boards at the end in case I missed or misjudged the powder charge.

Then I fired the 480 Achilles into the rags. The T-shirt that was first stopped the bullet.

The above images were taken from the video we took of it.

The bullet was smoked up a bit .. charge was too light to expand the base.

I have done it with .38 Special, .357, 9mm, 41 Magnum, 44 Special, 454 Casull, 475 Linebaugh, 30-30, 32-20, 44-40, 44 Magnum, 45-70 and probably a few others. Just use a sensible backstop and more or less rags as needed.

I am sorry but I don't have the faintest clue. We used .45 Colt cases cut to .90" ... just a hair longer than the .45ACP case.

Neat experiment, Jim. I see a lot of that powder coating came off.

So, does the coating eliminate the need for bullet lube?

Actually that is just smoke on the bullet. The powder coating is still intact underneath. The light powder charge did not obdurate the bullet enough to seal the bore and it had a lot of blow by.

Yes it does. It actually seems to work better than the plated bullets in some applications, especially rifles.

Use Unique. Or Black.
Actually ... I have no intention of getting into powder coating myself. I shoot them when I am given them or if they are a good buy for something but for my own use I prefer the sizing and lubing. To me no bullet can beat a Keith SWC with it's wide deep lube groove ....
