poor unloved 348 win!!

Post by Rockrat »

LGS has a '71 winchester, to say the least, is in poor shape. Hardly any blue and the wood is atrocious. Forearm might be saved, but buttstock needs replacement. Only good thing, is the bore looks great!!! Poor thing languishing in a corner. 2/3 mag tube. Would hate to re-bore the thing because the bore is so nice. Shop is asking $850 for it. I don't have dies anymore or brass. Still have some bullets, but no ammo. Never shot my Browning '71. 50 Alaskan sounds good but I think the base of the case is a little too small.

These seem reasonable if you can do final fitting yourself, probably not too expensive to have a pro fit them, then you finish them.

The .348 was a love of mine. Enjoyed it and loved shooting it. Took some nice game with it over the years. Even took it to Africa for Zebra. They are worth saving.

I would see if he might come down on the price. Still, if you want it, my opinion is that you should get it. The ballistics of the 348 are pretty good. Quite a bit of power. For larger animals such as elk or bear, it should do fine.

The 71 is a really special Winchester, if you ask me. The .348 is about as perfect an elk cartridge as there is. Somewhere on Youtube is a classic video of a bunch of guys going hunting with their Model 71s in the 1950s.

There's a gunshop in North Central WI that usually has 4-6 Winchester Model 71's at any given time. What a wonderful levergun !

I'd go for it. I had a Browning 71 that I let go as it had no throat to speak of, the finish on the stock was that plastic-y gloss, and it was really picky as to what it would it would shoot. Did really like the cartridge and the handling of the rifle, one of the few instances where a pistol grip stock feels right to me.
A real Winchester 71 that is cosmetically deficient would be welcome at my house and it would see lots of action.
