Winchester 1892 Trapper Takedown question

Post by ColeT »

New guy here. Haven't had a lever gun since the first firearm I bought in 1968 (a .444 Marlin). Just acquired a current manufacture Winchester Deluxe 1892 Trapper Takedown in ,45 Colt. Absolutely beautiful. I have a question regarding the takedown of the rifle. I have read elsewhere that taking down the rifle affects accuracy and it's difficult to avoid that result. I haven't yet fired the gun, let alone taken it down and was wondering if some here could enlighten me. Thanks.

If you take care of it, you won't have any problem. I think people worry too much about excess wear on the takedown parts. But I see a lot of old take down guns that shoot just fine. Keep it properly lubricated and you won't have any trouble.

Unless you shoot it loose like some of the old original you won't have anything to worry about. The BC of 45lc mmo will limit the accuracy more than a loose TD 92.
The other thing to consider too, is both sights are on the barrel. If you go with more precision sights, like a tang mounted peep, a loose TD will be a factor.

Thanks, gents. I'm going to add a Skinner barrel mounted peep sight, I think, as the open sight will probably be problematic to my old eyes. I'll take it down to clean and lube it before I shoot as I do with any gun I acquire.

I have a peep on my browning BLR on the receiver and it’s a takedown. My point of impact does not change. I know people will say that it will but that has not been my experience. I am not a fan of barrel mountain peeps. Might as well have a nice Buckhorn instead
Kind regards,
Tycer

If I can shoot reasonably well with the buckhorn, I'll leave it alone. But something tells me I'll need something that focuses old eyes a bit better. I appreciate everyone's input. I'll try to get the rifle out to the range next week.
