The five best firearms magazines (not the paper type)

Post by AJMD429 »

Some friends were debating the topic and we agreed on four....

1. factory Ruger 10/22 magazines
2. factory AK magazines
3. factory Glock magazines
4. Garand 'clips'

....what do you guys think would be the best candidate for the fifth...???

I'd probably go for the MagPuls made for the AR-15, or some of the higher-grade steel ones...

Magpul AR-15 or almost any Magpul mags I've owned were flawless. But I have numerous S&W semiauto handguns and the mags are also all flawless. Mine are all older S&W 59, 39, 745, and they made some very fine magazines for all of them.

If you only consider reliability, the AK mag is hands down winner. Where it falls short is it's weight and difficulty to carry do to its shape.

Glock would be next on my list. It has been reliable since it's inception.

If you include fixed magazines, the 98 Mauser is hard to best. So is the SKS and M1.

The Wilson 1911 magazine, and probably the original design.

The Magpul P-Mag for the AR.
The P-Mag was a huge contribution to the AR itself. While extremely reliable now, it wasn't always so, and the magazines were a contribution to that in the earlier days of the rifle. The P-Mags success, brought on many other updated magazines for the AR in more recent years.

If you shoot AR 10’s, the Rock River Arms that use the FN/FAL 308 mags are the best in this application. I’ve run 5000 rounds thru mine and never have had a failure to feed.

Back around 1980 I won a couple of Wilson magazines as a prize in an IPSC match. The magazines weren't available. I mean they hadn't become available yet so at the next monthly match Bill Wilson brought them to me. We often shot at the same place and being the uninhibited mouth that I am I asked if they were good enough to just load up and shoot right now. There were several other shooters listening to our conversation and I could see Bill hesitate momentarily. I know now he was remembering what gun I was shooting and it was one built by Frank Pachmayer and was dead reliable so Bill says "sure". So I loaded them up and they were splendid. To this day they are my pick as the number one magazine in the world. Those were the 7 round ones and I really like the 8 rounders that are available now.

The design of the gun which also include original manufacture tolerances and the caliber are also contributing factors in reliability.......some designs are dependent on jacketed ammo and they seem to get a bad rep.....like the German Luger....The AK works so good because it's a great design with sloppy tolerances and I've never heard of anyone casting bullets for it. :D

What killed the Stoner 63 machine gun was not the gun itself but the feeding mechanism......that's why the military has the 249 SAW......the original G.E. Mini Gun a.k.a."puff the magic dragon" was replaced by the Dillon Mini Gun. Oh! They are belt fed.

That thing below in my signature pic has mags that are built like brick poop houses....

Anything else interesting to B.S. about? I can't wait 'till this winter is over in another 6 weeks.

The Mauser designed staggered fixed box magazine has never failed me among many different rifles of different manufacter, different action lengths, push feed, control feed, cartridges long, short, fat and skinny. Tube magazines on the other hand have on a few occasions
