Minutes of Angle and Vision

Post by AJMD429 »

I was at the eye doc a few weeks ago, and he informed me that the height/width of the black lines on the eye chart is one minute of angle for 20/20 vision, and that the letter total height is five minutes of angle. The 'E' as an example makes the most sense, but if you think about it, all the other letters are the same kind of structure.

So if you have perfect 20/20 vision, you could theoretically see a one-MOA black line or dot at 100 yards, and "if you can see it, maybe you can hit it".

For those of us with 'experienced' eyes, our vision is often less than perfect, so we are lucky to see that black-on-white dot at 200 yards unless it is a bit larger than one inch.

Now if we are shooting at game, which tends to have muted earth-tone colors, and may be against a background that is similar, the odds of us being able to see one-MOA is pretty slim.

No wonder so many of us need scopes to shoot better than a few MOA.

As far as my vision, I didn't get corrective lenses until it was actually too late for some issues. I can see things close up, but even corrected, 100 yards is about the limit of what I can see 4 inches. It takes a scope for me to see 1 inch at 100 yards.
That professor who proved that kittens will be blind if their eyes do not open within a 36 hour period of the correct time for the connections to be made. She also showed that humans have a couple of years for certain pathways. If a child is born like me, so nearsighted as to be legally blind, they have until about 4 years old to get correcteive lenses or there are permanent issues. I was 7 before I got glasses. It left permanent coordination issues. My Mother told the Teacher who insisted that something was wrong that I was just clumsy. When you cannot see 15 feet in front of you, at all, and 5 feet is blurry, it should be fixed as soon as possible.

You mean there's a dot at 100 yards? Heck are you sure there's a target at 100 yards?
