Hey! You know, maybe you can form an alliance with that owl. You keep the crows off him, and he can do some huntin' for you.
Sounds like a pretty good deal. :D

Owls may have a bad reputation in some places, but they clean out the mice as well as anything can. I would choose an owl for a neighbor over a mouse anytime or anyplace.

I`m getting worried haven`t seen her today yet but may be sitting on eggs seeing it`s colder today.
To me the owl being here is a good thing. :)

Owl story for ya, in 1970-71 i think a buddy had a 69 GTO white with big tires it was beautiful.
We were cruising around the country side drinking Boons farm wine, there were two native American buddies (Chippewa ) with us.
We were going down this dirt road and a owl flew across the road in the head lights and one of the native Americans said something bad was going to happen.
We drove down a old drive to a abandoned farm place and built a fire and were sitting around drinking, all of a sudden there was a huge explosion.
The owner of the GTO crawled over and dropped a match down a pipe sticking out of the ground.
It was a pipe from a underground gas tank and it blew about a four foot dia. hole in the ground and peppered his face with dirt so off to the emergency room we went.
He luckily wasn`t hurt to bad but it was exciting.

Is there a pair? Or only the hen? I don't know their habits but isn't it very early in the year to be nesting?

Yep they meet up in the trees now and then, read some info on them and they nest early which seems weird.

When we were kids a tree blew down and we got two little owls out of a hole in it. Balls of fluff. Owl inside about the size of your thumb. But they could pop those beaks to make you back off. They didn't make it long.

We have a Barred owl that lives in the woods about 400 to 500 yards from the house.
At least 3 nights a week he wakes me up with his WHO WHO cooks for you!
I really don't mind at all!

Thanks for asking, i think the owl left for good she laid three eggs when i posted this but abandoned them.
Still hear them once and a while though, might have to put the house on a higher pole and put tin around the bottom maybe a coon scared them off.

The owl will keep the varmint, mouse, rat populations down ... not so good if you raise chickens or rabbits though

MM, the owl is believed to be an ill omen and harbinger of death in many First Nations cultures.
There is a wonderful movie about a priest in the frozen north -- "I Heard the Owl Call my Name."
I love the darned things, but more than once while still hunting I have had the daylights scared out of me by a great horned owl taking off right above my head.

Howdy Todd, when they were here the hooted quite often.
They would sit in the trees close by and could watch them, don`t think they will come back to this nest.

Thanks, had a owl roost within 25 yards of me and hooted every 5 minutes or so from 9pm til almost 3am. How much snow on ground. I see its gonna warm up some in the next week or so.
