best hunting bullets for heavier game in 357 levers

Post by mickbr »

Fellas what do you consider are the tougher expanding hunting bullets in 357. Say for pushing them hard out of a rossi 92. As to what I mean by heavier game- well its open to interpretation, but whatever you think doesn't stretch the calibres limits too badly. My view of that probably differs as 357 is my only calibre :D

180 grain Buffalo Bore shoots well from my Winchester 1892 .357 20 inch rifle. That should "do in" a black bear and maybe shoot through from some angles. Larger bears, well, you pays your money and takes your chances.
In fact the 158 BB might be OK for black bear.

Soon, some more experienced .357 rifle shooters should be along to share their knowledge.

BTB cast has the best alloy I've found so far . . .

http://www.beartoothbullets.com/bullets ... atagory=17

quite a variety to play with

I have the 185 loaded over LilGun for my carbine and handguns.. I've shot it from a 2" snubbie, 4" 66 and the winchester carbine.

I can't find velocity notes, but I would not hesitate to make meat from any of the above within bow range for the revolvers. Blaine, you shot that load from the snubbie...

Ooops, no, I ain't more experienced!

I used to have a Lyman mold for a 215 grain SWC with a GC shank . That bullet shot very nicely in a Marlin 1894CB in 357 I used to own , gun had a 24” barrel . It also did very well in a little 16” Marlin 1894CP I used to own . Obviously velocity wasn’t barn burner level and I had them as full of H-110 as I could get .

Veral Smith of LBT molds has a forum where answers questions over on Graybeard's Outdoor forums. He stated there once that his wife uses a Rossi '92 in .357 for taking her elk every year. He loads it with his 180 grain cast bullets.

Havent hunted with them, but Hornady 180gr XTP's are sposed to be great for expansion and penetration.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

I've killed deer with my home cast 180 gr bullets cast from a Lyman #2 alloy. 1 shot and they were done. Never recovered a bullet.

I've been loading 180 Nosler partitions over 'er some H110 for eldest son to use in his Rossis. I think he'd tackle a rhino with 'em.

While it appears Nosler has stopped making Partitions in .357, Swift still has two weights of A-frame. I'd try those were I going hunting.

I liked the Nosler 180 Partition Gold in the Mag and Max . Also liked the Nosler 44 cal 250 Partition Gold in the 44 Mag , 444 and in sabots for my Knight 50 cal Disc Rifle . The first deer I ever killed with a 444 was with the Nosler 250 Partition Gold in the first Marlin 444P I owned .

One of my two 1894Cs shoots Remington HTP 180gr SJSPs into little bug holes. What’s awesome about that is that my favorite revolver (early 686 6”) shoots the same load better than any other too.

In an 18.5” barrel ballistics look something like:

Remington HTP .357 Magnum 180gr SJHP
- BC: .202; SD: .164
- 1,565fps MV / 992fpe ME (Est. 18.5")
- MPBR (+/- 3", Sight @ Bore +1.5") 150yds / 1,176fps / 553fpe
- 0@15|1@25|2.5@50|3@65-80|0@127|-3@150
- MPBR (150yds): Penetration 17.8", Expansion: .560" (Est. Minimum Performance)

This is based on factory performance data plus gel tests of that load out of handguns with roughly the same impact velocity as the carbine displays at max point plank range.

have always used the Federal 180gr on deer at close range, I think the heavy A frame would be tough to beat.
