What is your go to firearm (long or side or both) for when things go bump in the night?

Post by wm »

Well its almost the weekend...…. Just to get a little conversation started heres a question to the group:

What is your go to firearms for home defense? If there was a disturbance in the middle of the night and you were to arm yourself as you rose from bed what would you reach for?

My go to are a Gen 1 S&W M&P 9mm with a OLight 550 lumens weapons light and a short barreled Baikal side by side shot gun. I admit the latter is a bit unconventional but I am convinced I can place two accurate shot gun blasts faster with that firearm then I can with a pump.

And frankly since I work third shift my wife is more likely to use the shotgun then I and she is better with the side by side, She tends to short stroke the pump shotgun under stress. Two for sure beats one and a "what the hell?". Also the layout of our home plays a big part. We sleep up stairs and we have a stairwell with a couple landings and turns so the most likely scenario is to stand at the top of the stairs and wait for the police to clear the first floor. If someone comes up the stairway then it becomes a stairway to the afterlife.

While up and about the LCP is always close. In bed, for inside, the Glock 30S is on the stand. The 870 Tactical is fully loaded with about 20 extras on the sling ready to go outside if need be.

Glock 19 w/ a Streamlight and a Sig MPX. There's a Rem Police Magnum stashed downstairs and Walther PPX hidden in the basement. When the garage is finished and secured, I'll find a spot for the Mossberg Shockwave.

Forgot about this one. Stays in the top desk drawer in my office. S&W TRR8

Lately, a Springfield M2.0 XD9 Subcompact with a CCI snake load up top.
Don't laugh. A face peppered with tiny shot, and probably blinding both eyes, is a non-lethal game changer. It would "concentrate the mind wonderfully," as has been said about waiting to be hanged.

If I were to have something close at night it would be a Colt LE6920 with an Aimpoint PRO and the stock collapsed.
If I hear something go bump in the night I sure as hl won’t go looking for it. I’ve got no kids or livestock to protect so I could just hole up and wait for 911 or Mr. Badguy to enter.
Kind regards,

Closest S&W 1917, Brazilian contract. Preferably though, Franchi 48L. 20 gauge with #4 buck.

On my nightstand rides a Gen 3 Glock 21SFwith a TLR-1, stuffed with 200gr. Hornady XTPs. A spare mag of 230gr. Ball.
The wife's nightstand has a S&W model 36 with Hornady Critical Defense ÷Ps.
In the closet is a 300BO AR with an Aimpoint T1 and a Surefire, loaded with 110gr Barnes Tac-TX.

That's the one that is ALWAYS with me. Mine is so beat up that I'd be lucky to get $50 for it...been dropped a hundred times. My load is a 200 gr. swaged rn with the round part flattened out in a sizing die.

I've got guns all over the place, loaded and ready to go...mostly semi auto rifles like AR's, Uzi's, and a couple of SKS's. I'm NEVER out of arms reach of a quality loaded gun.---6

A normal Night response (depending on how the dog launches) is an 870 Marine with red dot sight with two Buckshot then slugs. Or a lever gun in .44 or .45 with a red dot sight.

A 500 lumen flashlight and a Glock 22. By the time I move, there are already 3 loudly barking doge at the scene. Anyone who shoots my dogs is there to kill me, therefore they get hit with the light and then shot. The 3,000 lumen light is close at hand and will be used if needed. Anyone using NODs will be in pain and out of the fight.

Living in England, my go to weapon is a rolled up newspaper, only kidding, never was good at obeying stupid rules and regulations.
I'm lucky enough to shoot most days, so whatever I've been using may just happen to be very close by after dark.
Most Brits would probably have to go down stairs with a slipper or rolled up newspaper but that's their problem.

Yup, I can't see me ever being unarmed law or no law. Not many civilized countries left were you can legally defend yourself with a firearm, even some States are getting cissyfied when it comes to using deadly force to defend yourself.

I'm just curious about the situation in Britain …… how much leeway do you folks have with non lethal self defense items? Are you allowed Mace or Pepper spray? Is a bat (club) allowed? Stun guns? What about a stout cane, golf club etc.? What about pointy things like knives? The IRA really screwed you guys over.

As I understand it, in the UK you can use like force to defend yourself, if someone attacks you with a knife you can defend yourself with a knife, it gets sticky when you shoot someone who attacks you with a knife. The police view any object used in a violent way to be an offencive weapon so if you are carrying a cricket bat when not playing cricket the police could pull you in for carrying an offensive weapon. We can own and carry a Bowie knife BUT only if the knife is used for hunting or camping.
Street legal knives must be non locking and have a sub 3" blade.
Mace and pepper spray are illegal, in my job in pest control, I found that the spray you use on wasp stings was an effective alternative but if used on a bad guy the police could arrest YOU.
Using a firearm is okay if the bad guy has one but our guns are by law supposed to be under lock and key and the ammo kept separate.
Walking the streets or driving through not so pleasant neighborhoods you are virtually unarmed, unless that is you use your imagination.. My signature line sums up my feelings on the subject and no I do not carry a spear.
By the way most of these Draconian laws have little to do with the IRA, infact Northern Ireland has no handgun ban.

This is a sad state of affairs from a country that once had an army and navy known for the skill with edged weapons. But don't worry, if Europe attacks after you leave the EU (sort of like they did twice before) and we have a Republican president you'll be ok. If we have a democrat you could be in real trouble.

I have three firearms in my "nightstand", so it's really whichever one my hand hits first.

For this exercise let's just say I grabbed the S&W Model 36. Once out of bed and feet are on the floor, three steps from the bed is an 870 riot gun with 00 buck.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

I'm lucky enough to shoot most days, so whatever I've been using may just happen to be very close by after dark.
Most Brits would probably have to go down stairs with a slipper or rolled up newspaper but that's their problem.

Perhaps I revealed my ignorance of the history of the subject but I thought many of the gun control laws introduced were out of concerns regarding domestic terrorism.

Think about this. Use your cheapest effective gun. Because, if you use it, the police are going to take it for evidence.

I mean, I get it but I still look to the DW 1911. If I ever had to use it I don't think the cost difference between it and my G26 (which i love, btw) would really be what top of mind.

Our Draconian gun control laws started after the First World War, when talk of revolution was in the air, the other more usual reasons were two mass shootings which gave the government the chance to jump on the " Ban It " wagon.
Before WW1 we probably had fewer gun laws than the USA, beware it doesn't take much to lose freedom or whatever you keep on your nightstand to turn into a rolled up newspaper.
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

Depending which room I'm in. Living room = Sig P250, 45acp. Bedroom = Colt 1991, 45acp. Computer/guitar room = Sig P320, 45acp. Gun/Reloading room = whatever happens to be out of at the moment, always something.

Rossi 357 Magnum or,
S&W Model 10 or,
Makarov or,
Hi-Power - depends on what's out at the time

SKS is my long gun. Gotta get a spare, but the price
has gone up since I got mine for $125.

One of these days I gotta buy a pump gun. Or a double-barreled
coach gun. (Maybe in 8-gauge!  )
