Re-reading the best book I've ever read....

Post by AJMD429 »

The Red Heart by James Alexander Thom.

I met the author 20 years ago and he's an amazing guy. One of my uncles married a 4th or 5th generation descendant of the family it is about.

Best book I've EVER read by far.

Read it this winter and I'll bet you'll like it.

If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

Thom is a fascinating author who does a lot of research before writing his "fictionalized history" novels. I think he holds as true as he can with the facts while filling in the unknown gaps as it "could have happened" to bring history to life in a form we can appreciate rather than just names and dates.

Two of my favorites are "Long Knife", about George Rogers Clark and the immense contributions he made to our developing country, and "Follow the River", about our local hero Mary Draper Ingles who walked from the Ohio River back to the area of Blacksburg, VA after being captured by the Shawnees in the Draper's Meadow massacre. A lot of folks forget our Appalachians and the land just beyond were the "Wild West" in the early days of our country, and what sacrifices our early pioneers made in opening our land.

I, too, highly recommend Thom's work to anyone who enjoys history!

Another good one is 'Panther in the Sky' about Tecumseh and his 'crazy' brother known as 'The Prophet'.

'Sign Talker' is in my opinion a far better rendition of the Lewis & Clark expedition than the acclaimed 'Undaunted Courage'.

Thom know his history, and makes it real thanks to his writing talent.

When he describes war he doesn't sanitize it though, and that might offend some.

A book I read in the late sixties that runs in this time is " The Frontiersman " by Allen Ekert. It is about Simon Kenton a famous frontiersman in Daniel Boones time. You can smell the black powder from the flintlock rifles.
