The "Last Ride"

Post by 2ndovc »

We had to have our Great Dane Lucy put down this morning. She stopped eating about two days ago so I took her the vet yesterday. After some tests He found that she had a large tumor on her spleen that he may or may not be able to remove. We were up half the night deciding on what to do. We let her go peacefully this morning instead of putting her through all that at ten years old.

We had ten great years with Lucy. She was a wonderful girl that never whined or complained. She didn't have a mean bone in her body but was always there if you needed a big black dog on your side. I'll miss her forever.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. We are making hard decisions ourselves as our dobey(John Moses Browning, doberdog) had a stroke last week. I do understand, but what would the last decade have been like without Lucy. I truly hope that thought can drag a smile out...through the tears. God Bless.

Sorry for your loss, Jason.

It's a hard decision to make.

It's one of the most painful things in the world to lose a good friend. I believe you did her good by letting her go like that.

I hear ya bud. We have a pet cemetery out back with 18 markers. It tears (in both meanings of the word...tear) ya up something terrible but we all go back and do it again because what a dog gives in a lifetime is worth more than the pain when they pass.

After dealing with all of the backstabbing, deceitful, manipulating, lying, sociopathic, *** humans, my wife and I worship all of our animals and give them a life a lot of people don't experience. In fact, the wife is out right now buying boneless chicken breasts for our Yorkies, Shih Tzu, and the cats.

One of our horses is 34 years old...that's the attention we give our pets.

Hang in there bud... the pain will pass but the memories don't......it's all we can do.-----6

Aw man, that just tears at my heart strings...

Dogs like Lucy... They're not just pets -- they're members of the family!

I hope the words below bring you some comfort (author unknown).

Old No7

I Haven’t Left You – (A Dog’s Tale)

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said " it's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me, to be so near you every day.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "Good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I’ll have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out... Then come home to be with me.

I'm sorry to hear the sad news about Lucy, but I think you made the right decision for her.

What to say at a time like this? Having put down three in the last five years, including my Aussie in December, I know the heartache you are feeling. Only thing for it is time, and a new puppy.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I know a lot of you have been through it many times. It's never easy.
It's been a tough couple of days but everyone is holding up the best they can.
I usually get up early with the dogs and they get fed and out and they go back to bed. Lucy would stay with me until I got a banana for myself and would nudge me until I would giver her a piece. It was really hard not to hear those big footsteps coming this morning.

My condolences and prayers. It's something good pet owners sometimes need to do, but it sure hurts when we do.

It sure is tough to lose a great dog to old age, cancer, or whatever. When they are too sick to get around or eat anymore, it is a real sign of how much we love them when we let them go to their eternal rest peacefully. I have moved forward with life, but I have not forgotten several very special dogs. In time, you will move forward. You may decide to start another chapter in your life with another dog. If you do, remember that the next dog is an individual.
We lost an amazing dog about 3 years ago. The next dog has been a good dog, too. Different breeds and personalities. I wouldn't want to miss the time with either one.

Deepest condolences Jason.
It's never easy for sure.
The first litter my Lab had I had to put one of the pups to sleep. He had a bad heart. The vet was crying worse then I was! 7 days old... I'm tearing up thinking about it now. I told myself that a kid up above asked for a puppy.
They become such a part of our souls and sometimes they get under our skin but by God's grace they complete us!
Any day now my girl should be coming into season and I've picked out a real nice Fox Red( dark yellow) stud. If all goes well I'll post pictures of the litter!

Thanks again Guys. It gets easier as the days pass but there is still a huge hole in our house. It's funny to think about what a quiet dog she was but she made a lot of noise jut because of her size, I always knew where she was. My wife's oldest is disabled and Autistic but is also our little Dog Wisperer. He has a hard time with his emotions and it usually comes all out at once. He told us last night how much he missed her and wants another Great Dane puppy. I asked if we could wait a little longer and he was ok with that. Such a good kid!

Losing a dog is always tough. Replacing them is almost as hard. I think most people need time to mourn before moving on to the next dog.

Mourning is individual, and some take longer than others. Get it out of your system.

It's going to be a little while before we decide what to do as far as another dog. We still have three but I always say the two little dogs don't even add up to one big dog so they don't really count as two :) We're also going to be dog sitting for my mom when she undergoes heart surgery next month so I don't want to add another puppy into that mix. I couldn't go out and get another dog just to replace Lucy anyway, there has to be some thought behind it. I want another Lab and I know my wife wants another Dane so we're going to have to sit down with the kid and talk it all through. There will be another big dog in the house but we still have to get over the loss of our best girl Lucy.
