First Lever gun Deer kill

Post by 65 GRENDEL »

At age 52 I've killed many, many Deer, however unlike most hunters I started hunting with a 308 and never owned a lever gun until I bought this Winchester Ranger 30-30 last year, which also led me to add a Marlin 336 30-30 & a Marlin 1894 .357 magnum. Anyway I had a little luck a couple days ago & thought I'd share this South GA 9 pt with y'all.

Congrats!!! Awfully tame deer to let you rest your rifle on him instead of in the leaves and mud! Nice carry handle. :P  Seriously tho', good shootin', and a very good looking deer!

I have to admit that I wasn't sure just how well the old 30-30 would do, but at 80 yards the 150 gr Corlokt put him on the ground DRT. Im definately a believer now.

Nice buck.

The 30-30 has been around since 1894. It has been well perfected in those years.

Very nice. I would never be mad, or under-gunned if my only rifle was a lever 30WCF.....

NICE BUCK! Congrats on your first lever gun 'harvest'( have never liked that term).

People are too magnum crazy- velocity crazy, what have you. Buddy of mine years ago shot a cow elk at about 175-200 with cast 40-65 hand load, went clean through and she dropped in less then 50 yards. Slow but deadly works!

Also, if memory serves- the puny little 25-20 was used on a record book buck a long time ago...

Enjoy those back straps! Mmmm back straps...

I'm a gun guy, ive owned single shot, bolt action and semi auto rifles since I was 18. The truth is my favorite rifle like my moniker says is the AR 15 platform 6.5 Grendel. But I love all Gun's and I'm real glad I recently got the Lever gun fever and I really took pride in harvesting a nice deer with one. This weekend I'll be taking out the Marlin 336 30-30.

Reckon you done about as good as needed with the right rifle and load. You can't go wrong with a 30-30 and a 150 or 170 grain Corelokt round.

I don't check in often anymore but it is good to see a 30wcf in a 94 take a good buck.

Thanks for sharing, I also have a huge soft spot for 30wcf.

It'll happen, you just need patience, luck and time in the woods. You're in one of the best places in the world for Monster Whitetails, I envy you. Good luck.

I must admit that I was one of the ones that knew the history of the 30-30 but had never actually taken game with it.
