For you 1911 Fans

Post by Griff »

This was written by a good friend of mine. I believe some of you may recognize a photo I posted before... tho' cropped to protect his identity... now that he's used that photo in an article... I guess it's moot.

86er knows him... as he's hunted with 86er. He's a long time cowboy shooter, tho' nowadays he mainly shoots the SASS Wild Bunch. As you'll see, he loves his 1911s.

I know these days, with the 'semiauto pistol-caliber carbine' topics, a Glock would be far more practical as the basis for a pistol/carbine pair, but I have so much money/time/emotion invested with the 1911 platform (especially the double-stack Para Ordnance and/or Rock Island one) that I think I'll just stick with the 1911 for now. . . maybe the second century of its existence will see it bettered enough that I'll have to switch sometime before 2111 A.D... :D

A pig hunt with a 1911 sounds fun. I have not tried my 1911 on any game yet. I guess I will need to do it someday. For some reason, it seems to me that a 230 grain FMJ at around 900 fps would penetrate very well. Maybe it seems that way due to all of the real world experience that some folks have with the .45 ACP doing just that.

I do seem to remember Paco writing in one of his books about loading the .45 ACP up very hot and putting heavier springs in, seems as I remember 25 pound springs(I could be wrong). He stated that it made the .45 ACP a much better gun for use in Drug Enforcement.

Does the Delta Elite use the same basic frame as the 1911, or is it beefed up for the hotter round?

I like his mention of the LAR Grizzly (for obvious reason):
