POITICS - Essay on Foreign Policy

Ok, don't kill me for this. This particular piece is very long and reflects on both distant and recent history to elucidate its points. In spite of the title, it seems to be relatively free of political tilt in either the left or right hand direction though one will tend to read into it based on one's own perspectives. It carries many interesting quotes ... I think you will enjoy it.

One of the points that got me thinking is that very early in our history there was a recognition that the more we use our power (economic, military, etc) to spread our ideals to other nations ... the more diluted our ideals (liberty for example) become internally. To quote the article ...

A big, expansive foreign policy requires a big, powerful central government to advance it, and such a government imperils American liberties. It also imperils its democratic soul. As John Quincy Adams memorably put it in 1821, America might become “the dictatress of the world,â€
... I love poetry, long walks on the beach, and poking dead things with a stick.
