Side lever concept???

Post by Rusty »

I know several years ago The Gibbs Rifle Company made some Lee-Enfield Rifles into some rather nice bolt action .45-70's. That got me to thinking... I'm wondering if a Pattern 14 Enfield in .303 couldn't easily be converted to a .45-70 as well without a lot of trouble?

THE ANSWER IS YES IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO CHANGE IT TO THE KROPATCHEC[SP] MAUSER DESIGN. I FIGURE ABOUT A BOXCAR AND A HALF OF GREASY GREEN PAPER WILL PUT YOU 45/70 SIDE LEVERIN' IN MIGHTY TALL COTTEN.
OR YOU CAN JUST GO FIND AND BUY A KROPATCHEC[SP] MAUSER WHICH FEEDS 45/70 AMMO LIKE PHHHHIT THROUGH A GOOSE.

Rusty, enfield conversion is doable. I happen to know where one is, and it is for sale.

There is the first of a 6 part article about converting a Mosin to 45-70

Looks pretty straight forward.

Being a confirmed 45/70 fanatic I at one time owned and shot a Siamese Mauser converted to 45/70.Very very accurate.Very very strong action that can be hand loaded wayyy beyond anything else but a #1 Ruger.
The downside and reason I divested myself of it was that the darn thing was so bulky and ungainly.
Once you own a lever action 45/70 all else pales in comparison in reference to handling and accuracy.
The only other 45/70 which is to me a joy to carry and shoot is an NEF Handi rifle.

My rememberer kicked in this afternoon and it reminded me Navy Arms and/or Gibbs used the No4 Enfield (or maybe the No5 Jungle Carbine) to build .45-70s as well.

I know where I can pick up a No4 MkI for $200 OTD or less (complete with Ramline stock  ) but I don't know of an immediate source for a .45-70 barrel threaded for the Enfield and I'm not willing to pay to have one threaded at the moment. Besides, it's not like I'm already project poor anyway...

I LOVE my old Sporter SMLE Gibbs Frontier Summit Rifle "Smelly Nelly" especially with this awesome Aussie peep sight gifted to me by my friend in Perth. :D

Yes Ji, that's exactly the piece that got me thinking about this. I guess more about the possibility that the practicality. Jr reminds me all the time that I don't shoot what I have now. Somehow life keeps getting in the way.

Who says it's all about the shooting? Sometimes it's just the having it that gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling.
