Hunting Lease pics (pic heavy)

Post by RustyJr »

Went up to the hunting lease today to check on the food plot and replace a game camera. About 4 weeks ago I planted a small patch of cow peas and then about one week ago I planted another larger section of them. As of last weekend the deer had not found the food plot. Well . . . they found it some time between then and today.
This is a track on the road going into my spot.

The rest of the pics are of the tracks in and around the plot.

This are some of the tracks leading to a "water hole". I actually dug this out for the sole purpose of filling my buckets to water the plot . . .guess the deer like it too.

These are some of the Iron clay peas I planted on the first trip up. You can see where they have nipped off the tops of some of them.
Image
Lord willing the next time I go up I will see how many different deer are coming in. I put a little corn out in front of the camera so that the deer would hopefully "pose" for the camera.

Too bad there are fcsdlah's who steal trail-cams, or you could leave up a trail-cam and see what's there...

This is on a private lease. We have a trail cam up. Hope to see what's making the tracks in a few weeks.

Up in Jasper, right on the Fla./Ga. line.

We were wondering what else to plant in the food plot. Jr. put in a few purple top turnips yesterday. I was thinking I've always seen big deer in soy bean fields. Maybe some of those would bring them in as well.

Just trying to stay away from a corn feeder as that has proven to bring in bears, which we can't shoot.

Rusty. I live not too far from there and on our club, we have great results with Winter Rye (not rye grass), oats, any kind of pea or bean, purple top and/or just right turnips, rape, any of the greens and some of the clovers. We also use some of the commercial mixes, but we are careful to note their contents before we buy. A lot of them contain mostly oats. The winter type peas or beans tend to not last very long as the deer will eat them down over night. We almost always have to lime the plot each season to get a decent PH level. Lablab is also another good crop, but very expensive and the deer have to learn they can eat it. It is a climbing plant, so we plant some type of stalk plant for it to attach to. We are also trying Triticale, but it is hard to find and a little expensive. We have had the best growth with regular 10-10-10 fertilizer.

Thanks Bruce for the added information. We did lime it, as we were told that would be needed by the care taker of the property. We're looking for different things to plant to develop a really good plot. I was thinking of trying some soy beans as well since I know farmers that grow them can't keep the deer away.
Our local feed store already told us they could get the triticale and suggested we try it as well. The hardware store in Jasper is like a small town hardware store from the 50's and they have a wide selection of everything.

Soy beans are a good choice due to the tonage produced...
but it is a bit late to plant for that kind of volume..but they love it!

Rusty, I know that store well. I was in the club right off of 6 on the river for awhile. Some buddies of mine still have the club as far as I know.
