OT: Sombrero
This may seem like an odd request, but I would like to find a source for an authentic peasant's sombrero. All I can find on the interweb is the costume kind...like a marache (sp) band would wear. I need a large straw sombreo for my father (the larger, the better). He has had some skin cancer cut off from the tops of his ears and side of his face. He is retired and spends at least 10 hours a day outside on the tractor or his bulldozer. I bought him a Stetson cowboy hat, but he doesn't like it for some reason. If I can't find a sombrero, maybe he would wear a WW1 era campaign hat. Thanks Y'all.

Re: OT: Sombrero
most of the Sombrero aren't big enough to fit mostly sitting on top of your head requiring a stampede string. I have one. I also have one of these.
Guatemalan palm
I reshaped it to a sombrero shape. Easy to do, just dunk it in cold wet then shape and dry

If those don't suit you, try looking at the Tilley hats.
http://www.tilley.com
I use to wear Stetons and the like, but the Tilley's are wonderful. Best warranty I have found, light weight, most of them float due to a unique small inner packet, good neck and ear coverage (wide brim) , lightweight and washable. I have one that I have worn every day outdoors, hunting, fishing and farming for over four years. I have another for more dress type occassions. I don't dare even try to know how many times the work one has been washed and you can't tell it. If it is real hot in your area, those with the breathable top (mesh - AirFlo) are better. They do have a different size chart that should be adhered to.
I have worn hats (not caps) all of my life, even at work and I have found nothing like them. While I was still working, we issued them as standard field head wear to the officers of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. That is where I got my first one that I still have.

The Quatalma Palms are pretty nice hats. I hate small brims and found them, they can be formed as Nate mentioned and will keep the sun off the whole top of your body. I bought three of them and don't regret them a bit. Good luck in your quest.

Re: OT: Sombrero
I have the same hat Nate posted. Even wore it down Mexico way, and Mexican vendors wanted to buy my "sombero."
Here is another version made by the same folks:

Rock - Steady: They carry those big palm hats at Gibsons in Kerville. They are comfy and are about 15-20 bucks.
