Accurate 5744 powder

I find that this 5744 powder was once called XMP5744 and also, I think, MP5744. All by the Accurate company.

I am using this powder for only 45-70--400 gr bullet loads to duplicate the Remington factory load and also the old black powder load.

Browning 1886 SRC, barrel 22" and guess my velocity is about 1400 fps. Maybe 50 fps faster than the Remington factory load.

Main question is:

I read that this powder tends to leave unburned powder when fired but also that some found it excellent for the 45-70 cartridge. I have checked it for unburned powder and didn't find any. They say you don't have to use filler with this powder, and I don't.

Have any of you used this powder for the 45-70? How did you like it? Is there another powder you think is better for duplicating the Remington 405 gr factory load?

I use 5744 for .45-70, .40-65, .38-55, .223, .45 Colt and more.
I does tend to leave a few unburned grains behind from time to time, especially in my .45 Colt revolver. It doesn't hurt a thing. Just shoot through it.
It is extremely accurate and consistent in my .45-70s (I have a 1886 Browning rifle, 1874 Shiloh Sharps, and 1885 Browning BPCR.
My .223 load is a very consistent prairie dog popper.
I don't use it for hunting with my .45-70. It is a little slow for my taste. I use 4198 and Hornady 325 gr FTX bullets and get about 2050 fps. I think all I could get out of the 26" 1886 using 5744 was 1750 fps.

I've used 5744 in a number of cartridges from the 25-36 Marlin up to and including the 45-70 .

Used it with cast bullets to kill deer in the 30-30 , 32 Special ,32-40 , 35 REM , 356 WIN , 375 WIN , 38-55 , 38-56 , 40-65 , 444 Marlin and 45-70 .

I had used SR4759 before using 5744 . But found 5744 to be more position friendly in the case .

I have since pretty much gone away from 5744 since my cast bullet shooting now is more aimed toward pushing big lead bullets in slow twist Micr Groove barrels so I need the greater velocity of H322 , RL-7 , Varget or IMR8208 .

ditto! I think its a great powder.I have also used it in my milsurp rifles.for you finn mosin nagant shooters..

I use it in the .45-70, the .40-90SBN & .45 Colt. In the Colt I get a little unburned powder. There's better choices for that caliber, IMO. I don't have any unburned powder in either the .45Gov't or the Sharp's cartridges.

It's a powder that I buy in the 8lb jug... super for big, BP case cartridges.

I also find it a great powder and have used it in the .45-70, .38-55 and the .40-65 mostly. It does leave behind unburned grains until the load is up to near the max and then it starts to burn clean for me.
The problem ,for me, is I don`t want max loads for these rounds so I sometimes find other powders work better for reduced loads with lighter bullets like 2400 does better in my .38-55 with plain base 250gr. bullets when trying to keep velocity in the 1300 fps and below range. Now take the same bullet and push it up to 1400 fps with 5744 and all is good again but recoil and leading start to be a factor.
You just have to try it and see how you like it .

I use it with a cast boolit in my 33 wcf and yes I do get unburned kernals but even with that it is the most accurate and stable load I haVE USED IN THIS GUN.(sorry went Terry on ya without meaning to but I ain,t retyping all that) Tom
