Off topic 1911 lube

Any of you guys use white lithium grease on your 1911's, I have for over 25 years but just seen Kimber recomends against it, just oil. what do you guys think.

I've packed a 1911 on duty for about 12-13 years. Through summer heat, winters snow and cold, sand dunes, etc.. I've tried most any and all lubes out there. I find the greases, whether synthetic, teflon, etc.. tend to get dirty and slow the slides recoil cycle. I've finally settled on synthetic oil and even though it does tend to migrate a little, I find it works the best for me.

I just use Breakfree. I don't use a lot.

Started using Breakfree back in late 70s early 80s when I was shooting IPSC. I had one old 1911 built by Frank Pachmyer that I must have put half a million rounds through. Always used Breakfree on it.

In hot Aridzona I sometimes use a tiiiiny bit of Gunslick graphite grease on my Kimber 1911 here and there, but only when I'm about to shoot it in the heat and it always gets cleaned after. I'd not do that for carry or for long term storage etc. as I agree that it attracts too much junk. Mobil 1 or any good synthetic gun oil like Break Free LP are reportedly quite a bit better than old petroleum oils when it comes to protecting metal in sliding parts.

Best,
Oly

(Oldheimer's Edit: Changed it to Gunslick graphite - the black stuff - not sure what the heck I was thinking but anyways, sorry for the confusion. I sometimes use a tiny bit of GUNSLICK on my stainless 1911.)

I started using Gun Slick years ago. It's a graphite based "paste". It has worked regardless of weather conditions. It was really good for early stainless autos that had a tendancy to gall. That and BreakFree are about the only lubricants I use, except for a few rare places I use good ole RemOil.

On new or newly fitted 1911s I'd use a bit of the Gun Slick grease till they worked in. After that just a bit of gun oil.

My Mil-Spec has only seen Hoppe's No. 9 and it's performed perfectly. I'm not a fan of over lubing firearms and I've had good luck over the years.

The only issue I'd raise Steve is that the film strength of No. 9 can't be that strong. The barest bit of synthetic oil would be no more messy but offer tremendously greater protection against metal/metal contact and wear. Probably take a serious bunch of rounds down range to see the difference, but...

Oly

TX Pete, I used the LSA on my M-60 and it worked every time. For my semi-auto pistols I use Tetra Gun. It is a white teflon lubricant and just a little goes a long way. It also seasons a bore so that it doesn't get so dirty. I think it is the teflon getting into the pores of the metal.

I hear you on the M60 mine was a M60D.when rearming the cobras and mini-guns we got LSA-T in big tooth paste tubes 1 QT size.I would just give the main rotor and delinking feeder a good squirt of the LSA-T and that mini would just hum@ 4000 rounds a minute.cleaning was alot easier also.
I still have some stashed and I use it on all my bottom feeders :D .

Gun-Slik on the rails... no excess. Dry graphite everywhere else. Whether stoored for years or seconds after cleaning, no need for any other prep.
