New to me 1972 circa Marlin 444T

Post by 6pt-sika »

Got the 1972 vintage 444T today !

Cleaned the bore it looks great , cleaned the wood and put a couple coats of wax on and it looks great as well !

I have an old long base Weaver 63B on the way to me as well as an old Weaver V8 to mount on this rifle . But being as I couldn't wait I just mounted a Weaver 63B short base and a nice old Weaver K4 so I can shoot it at the range maybe this weekend !

The all impostant "444T" rollstamp !

And the even more important "72" in the seriel number confirming the gun was seriel numbered to 1972 !

While this gun was supposedly no longer in production by 1972 this one semi disproves that . I also know of atleast one more that seriel numbers 1972 !

I was gonna shoot the BRP Ranch Dog style 432-375GC in the last 1970 vintage First Model I got . But I've found that rifle has a taste for the LBT 433-320GC LFN bullet .

So I suppose this 1972 rifle is a prime candidate for the BRP/RD 432-375GC bullet

Well 6pt you got me. You know I have a soft spot old Marlins and old weavers. Nice set up. The long bases are getting hard to come by. Only thing that would make it better is a pivot mount. I like it. reflex264

If I can ever find a Second Model of 1972 vintage I'll stop getting the darn things !

I "think" I have 22 Marlin rifles chambered for the 444 Marlin cartridge now !

So now I'm down to those and a pair of Marlin 1895's that were made in 1972 and 1978 .

Life has gotten a good deal simpler in some ways since liquidating all the other Marlin's

Free'd up a good deal of shelf space as well in my loading room when I disposed of all the dies , molds and brass I had for the rifles I sold off . Now I only halfway have to dig to find anything

Have a long base coming from a guy on Gunbroker loacted in Alabama and have a nice old Weaver V8 coming from another fellow on Gunbroker down in Georgia !

Bit more glass then needed but what the heck it isn't like I'm gonna hunt the rifle everyday !

That'll put me at two with V8's , 3 with KV's , one with a Marlin 4x , one with a Bushnell 1.75-5 illuminated (circa 1978) , one with a Redfield 1 3/4-5 , one with a Redfield 1-4 , two others with Weaver K4's and the remaining ones with Weaver K2.5's or K3's .

Oh yeah my newly restocked circa 2001 rifle has a nice new Redfield Evolution 3-9 scope that was meant for my ML .

[ Only thing that would make it better is a pivot mount.]

You only think so........

A Weaver 2x scope in Weaver Pivot mounts, swung off to the side so I could use the iron sights of my 1st .444 in 1967 gave me my first/only bloody scope-cut eyebrow (on the "off"/forward eyebrow), when I touched one off. :o

That's when I decided that, if I didn't want to use the scope, I wanted it OFF the rifle - and changed to QD mounts, pitching the pivots. 8)

As I said I have another long 63B on the way to me . But now that I think about it some I've kinda been buying any old long 63B's I find as well as the Weaver rings with the large old style thumb screws .

Hopefully some day I'll be able to have all old long 63B bases and old big thumb screw rings on ALL my 444's and 45-70's

Yep I like them. I have never been cut while using them. I got luck a while back and landed several brand new Weavers from the 50s and 60s. I just happen to have a pile of old Marlins that sure did need them. I tracked down every new in the pack Weaver pivot set up I could find and even bought a couple of mint condition old ones. Here are a few of them. I think I posted them here before the big crash but all of my early posts are gone. reflex264

A also brand new never used K2.5 in pivots on a 1st model .444

Here is a K3 on the rifle it was mounted on in 1952. This scope was mounted at a gun shop when the gent bought the rifle. The rifle and scope are near mint. When the buyer got home with it he shot it a few times, oiled it and set it in a closet where it stayed until 2004.

I do use some regular mounts as well with the old Weavers
Here is a K4 (from the 1960s) on my Marlin .375.

I don't mean this as a highjack 6pt
