What's your favorite 30-30 load

Post by hondo1892 »

I haven't reloaded the 30-30 for several years. Back when I did I used H335 and nosler 170gr. bullets. I plan on starting to load for this cartridge again and would like to know what your favorites are. I was getting really good accuracy with my old load but Nosler discontinued the bullet I used. It was a flat nose boat tail. I picked up some Hornady 170gr flat nose at Cabala's yesterday and was wondering if any of you use them.

My handload for the .30-30 is 30gr of IMR-3031 behind a 170gr bullet using Winchester Brass and Winchester Large Rifle Primers.

I use CCI 200 primers but, yeah, that's my favorite, too. Current manuals show 29 gr. IMR 3031 as max.

32 Grains of W748 - Win or RP brass, WLR primers and Speer 170's. Gives right at 2100 fps out of 20" barrels.

This is considered a max load - do not exceed!

I find that generally, the 170's shoot more accurately out of my leverguns and they do a good job on game.

IMR3031 is considered the "classic" 30-30 powder.

Also my favorite Load, but for some reason the Hornady Manual lists 28 grains as the max. I load it with that 28 grains, and it shoots so well out of my rifles that I have never tried any other loads. I got the load from Hobie 4 years ago, and never looked back. Just to be on the safe side I would recommend starting 10% below max, and work up to the 28 grains. I always get Top of the line performance with that bullet you have on Deer!

When Sierra made their .30-30 bullets in .307" dia they would go a full 2200 fps with the IMR3031 load.

Win WLR primer, 34.5grs Win 748, Speer 150 gr SP. Been using that load for decades and so far it's proven itself accurate in many 30-30s I've shot it from.

My do all load is 32.0 grains of Varget under a Sierra ProHunter 170 grain bullet. I use Winchester large rifle primers and Winchester brass but am not picky about brass and primers. This load shoots well out of every 30-30 I have tried it in.

Here is a group at 100 yards from kneeling with the gun in my avatar. I missed the dot but it is still deer killing.

I don't have a big selection of powders or primers or bullets for that fact. They are all hard to come by. I have mostly CCI primers and I think I have a little 3031 and some H335 powder. My Marlin 336 shot very well with the H335 don't know fps of the load but very good groups. My daughter has a 64 Winchester with a 24" tube so it may get a little more speed than my 20". But not as concerned with velocity as accuracy. Thanks for the replies.

311041 (180.5grs) and 27grs of 3031. Power and superb accuracy.

30 grains of IMR 3031 under a 150 grain (actual weight lubed and gas checked is 160 grains) RCBS bullet, for right around 2,200 fps.

I like a maximum charge of 748 with110 and 150 gr jacketed bullets, a full case of rl15 with 170's, and 18 grs of 5744 with most cast bullets from 150-180 grs. CCi or ww large rifle primers, just depends on what you have on hand.

That's pretty much what I use in my 30-30's as well--for jacketed bullets. I use mostly Corelocts. One of my rifles is particularly fond of 32.0 grains of Winchester 748--again, behind a 170 grain bullet. My cast bullet loads are specific to each rifle I use. If you start using cast bullets a lot, keep very good notes for the loads, diameters, powder, and rifle you have developed a favorite load for.

The favorite hunting load in my three .30-30s is WLR primer, 35 grains H-414, and RCBS 30-180 FN which runs 191 grains checked and lubed. Velocity runs 1953 fps in 20" barrels to 1974 fps in 24".

I always used 3031 when I did handload for the 30/30, but quite a few years ago, I ended up with a large supply of Winchester Factory 170gr Slivertips and I I am still shooting them. They have worked great in every 30/30 I have ever shot them in.

I like a large dose of 748 CCI 250 primer and a Sierra 150gr BTSP yep a spitzer bullet, or can't find them any more a Rem Bronze point 150 gr. But I shoot them in a 788 Rem.

I hadn't been able to find any 170 JFP's until last mont's collector meeting. I found 2 boxes of the Nosler 170 JFPBT's. They appear to be longer than the few Sierra 170's I have left. Is there anything different about these I should know about.....significant BC difference, with the BT....being more pointy than the Sierra's, etc.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.
