If you goof up your e-mail address, it bounces to me. Each new user (on the temporary forum) should receive a confirmation e-mail. If you didn't, you probably got the e-mail wrong. I just got a couple of those. One was from a "yahoo.net" address and the other escapes my mind. Anyway, please use your real e-mail address. You WILL NOT receive spam from http://www.sixshootercommunity.com, it is merely to allow you to receive communications from the forum (such as notices for when someone replies to a message you posted or replied to) By using a fake address you increase my spam load, so please use your regular e-mail address.

Also, you MUST allow cookies in order for the forum to work properly. If you don't allow cookies then the forum will not be able to recognize your login when you browse to a new page. WE DON'T USE COOKIES TO TRACK YOUR SURFING or for any purpose other than for the forum to function properly. The cookie only shows the program that YOU are the one changing from one page to another - this keeps your session from getting hijacked by a spammer or other nefarious internet scum. Many of the "problems" folks have when using this new forum is that they don't allow the cookie to be set - and so they can't post.

Also, if you have problems REGISTERING - drop me an e-mail:

AOL especially causes problems - most AOL users are not able to see the code needed to register. That's OK - send me an e-mail with your username, e-mail address, etc and I'll set you up manually, then you'll just need to login, change your password, edit your profile, etc.

No problem with mine, I always use my regular email addy. However, I also have a valid Yahoo email addy. Will a valid Yahoo addy bounce back or will it work? Just curious as I've never used it for a forum.

Any valid e-mail address should work. I've never heard of a yahoo.net address before and suspect the user is attempting to "shroud" his e-mail address or something. Anyway, if it's NOT a valid address it bounces to my inbox, creating yet another e-mail I must take a look at to see WHY it bounced - only to find that someone tried to outsmart the system. No need to outsmart the system here - we don't spam folks - PERIOD.

OK. So far I THINK we've got everyone up and running that has set up a new account. We've received notices from a few for problems ranging from "I can't see the confirmation code image" to "I can't sign in"

Guys, this forum requires cookies. We're benign. That cookie ONLY serves to keep someone from hijacking your session and posting crud under your name. In other words - it protects your good name. So please, don't worry about cookies from this forum. We DO NOT use them to spy on anyone nor send junk mail etc.

AND if you're still having problems, drop me a note. We're doing what we can to get folks up and running, thanks for your patience and understanding.

Between the May and the end of August a huge number of spammers found this site and set up a bunch of usernames with links to porn and other objectionable sites. Now, what you do on your own time and what not is your problem, but we WILL NOT tolerate the use of this forum for the promotion of web content contrary the principles of those who founded Leverguns and The Frontier Sixshooter Community. This is a traditional family oriented website. There's plenty of "alternate lifestyle" and "adult" ("adult" in this context is a code name for "never grew past junior high mentality") websites out there for folks who see things differently from us. We don't expect to link from there to here nor will we allow links from here to there.

So, since the spammers are finding ways around the filters we've set up we've had to ratchet up security another notch. Folks who sign up as of 9:00 a.m., September 7, 2007 will have to be confirmed by the Webservant. This will take a bit of time, depending on his regular work load on things other than this, our hobby. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience and hope you understand that it's due to the nefarious bottom feeders of the 'net that we've had to take this measure and in no way reflects on the legitimate denizens of the Leverguns Forum.

Also, if for some reason you can't see the image that is required for signup purposes, just drop an e-mail note to the Webservant with your requested username and he'll get you set up ASAP.

OK. For the AOL users, check out your AOL controls. There's some site filtering stuff in there you need to check out. I know nothing about this other than theoretical stuff. What I DO know is that you need to check out your controls and see if there's something in there about filtering and cookies and javascript. Wish I could be more specific, but AOL is a foreign language to me. If anyone wants to drop me a note with specific instructions on what to do to make posting here possible from AOL, please do so. We'll pass the information along to folks who are having problems. A lot of them seem to be AOL users which suggests to me that there's a problem on the AOL software side of things.

Over the past week or so as people come drifting in to the refuge, several folks have experienced difficulties of one kind or another. We've also had to implement some anti-spam/anti-spammer features to keep the bottom feeders at bay. These measures have caused problems for some folks. Now, we want to keep folks happy and all and have done our best to do so. However, we're not hearing back from folks often as to the results of our efforts. There's no way we can chase down each of the over 200 members and say "Everything OK?" So, if you DO have problems, feel free to drop a note to the e-mail address listed above and let us know. It's also helpful if you'll drop a note to let us know that our efforts resolved your problem - or not. Our goal is to keep this place running smoothly. Thanks for helping us to do so.

Woah- I certainly appreciate the hoops YOU gentlemen having been jumping through to provide us with a great gathering place! I absolutely had no idea that all the underhanded garbage mentioned above is going on- yuk.

I did send Hobie a message today through a quasi-bizarre alternate route, the only way I could find; after a time I'm hoping he can give me the second "in".

The word is the "old format" can be considered a '"fond memory". The software is no longer being supported. Joel is working on a replacement. No one else seems to know what that replacement will be at this point. Only time will tell.

Twice today I've been asked to resolve problems but given either the wrong user name and/or e-mail address used. Can't help if I can't find you BUT I do understand how some are using multiple IDs on multiple forums. It sure has paid me to use the same e-mail addy and ID for all the forums.

Seriously though, it's pretty much up to time and random electrons. Hobie and I are working on ironing out some details (like we SHOULD have the nifty background levergun image - but it's not there???) and I'm working on getting the one sticky up in its subdomain. If there's info that needs to be "saved for posterity" and is NOT in the One Sticky on the old forum, then it'd help if folks would save it and send it to me as a Word document or .txt file or ??? (NOT PDF) and we'll eventually get it up - the Good Lord willing.

So it's pretty much a matter of helping to provide for the saving of non-obvious items (those NOT already in the One Sticky post over there).

I know we are all addicted to this site (new and old), and get upset when it is down, but that should never be aimed at you or your peers. Please accept my apoligies on behalf of us all if we have ever seemed ungrateful. That is certainly NOT the case!

I just reread an earlier post of mine from a different thread, and I can see where it would be interpretted (sp?) as grousing. That was not my intent, and I am sorry. I know what it is like to work full time and have several other things you contribute to - often thankless. I, for one - and I know I am not alone - thank you!

I just find this site (new and old) so full of awesome wisdom and experience, its a shame to see it go. I know next to nothing about computers though - and even less about servers. I know you are doing your best - and again, WE ALL APPRECIATE IT!!!

I've NO idea what post you're referring to, Ysabel. I try not to "keep a record of wrongs" - life's way to short. My "grousing comment" was a poor attempt at humor, sparked by the inevitable comments about the move. This will never be "the original Leverguns.com Forum" - but we hope to make it as much of a home as possible anyway, a great place to hang one's @, so to speak.

Check another sticky soon to go up for ideas on how to help us as we work on getting this set up.

And thank you for the kind words.

If we do lose our post counts from the old site, please remember that these guys were well above my post count. Like I said - I am a piker not fit to clean their guns! Lots of guys right under my name too that have a ton more knowledge than I (JimT, Tycer, Junior, BlaineG and others) but my screen print wouldn't get them all in. Plenty of folks with a ton less posts as well that are too busy forgetting more than I will ever know about leverguns.

Long and short of it is that I am honored to be here, and glad you all let me stay and share a story or two (or 10 or 20) each evening! That being said, as everyone can see, I can't seem to shut up, so I guess my post count here is going to grow!

Something must be wrong with my AOL server, when I clicked on your link it did nothing. I took your tip, and downloaded Firefox, and I am ready to go as I am able to post a reply now. After reading a different post I do believe I will be letting my anti gun AOL server go, and getting something new soon. I need high speed anyway. Thanks again for all your help we are keeping you busy with the new site.

OK. We've had oodles of problems with AOL in one way or another (or another, or another, or...) AND I goofed. That wasn't supposed to be a URL, it was supposed to be an image - of my e-mail address.

I'm glad you got up and running with Firefox. An excellent choice of browsers...

Guys, the least you could do is set up a junk, throwaway e-mail address. We get enough spam and junk to sort through without getting a bounce each time someone private messages folks on the forum who don't have a valid e-mail address. So our inboxes fill up because someone's trying to be cute or something. I've received several bounces from failed private message announcements because someone didn't use a valid e-mail address. You can hide your e-mail address in your profile, you can choose to NOT receive announcements or private messages and such. Please be considerate is what we're asking. By refusing to use a valid e-mail address you're throwing junk at us each time someone private messages you, not to mention the initial bounce from the activation process.

And NO, we don't spam you. The e-mail and the cookies on this site are to keep down the number of junk accounts and to keep your account from getting highjacked by some spammer or other ne'er do well. We've been nuking an average of three or more spammers per day - please don't increase our work load.

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation. We're glad to provide this service but DO appreciate a bit of consideration from our guests to help things run smoothly.

For your information, a "throw away" address can be registered at www.yahoo.com www.gmail.com www.hotmail.com and so on. By throw away we mean that you can register them and if they fill up with spam you can let 'em die. And this simple step will keep the moderators from having to sort through even more junk than usual.

Bounced e-mail will result in private message notification being turned off in your profile. You'll still get a popup about a new private message (unless you've got popups turned off for this site) but the e-mail notification will get zapped, you'll only find out about new private messages if you check your private message box manually or happen to see the popup.

Guys, the most common problems on the forum are cookie related. "Invalid session" indicates that for some reason your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc) is not properly processing the cookies. The forum use cookies to ensure that no one can hijack your session (just imagine some "organ enhancement" spam - posted under YOUR handle!!!) and if your browser isn't handling cookies right (for example - you're browser isn't even allowing them) then you'll have problems posting. Also, AOL is a real pain. Probably 90% of the support requests I've received are from AOL users. Since I do NOT use AOL there's not much I can do to help you since their software is completely unfamiliar to me. If you DO use AOL to connect to the internet, I'd suggest you use Firefox or Mozilla Seamonkey or Opera or ... anything but AOL or Internet Explorer - to actually surf the web with. Again, if there's a specific issue that's NOT been dealt with in the stickies or the One Sticky then e-mail me direct at:

You'll need to type the address into your e-mail as it is just an image with no link.

And yet one more thing. If you've got a gmail account - you'll have to send me an e-mail with your username and I'll set you up manually. Three days ago I took gmail off of the banned list and got hit with about 80 spam signups using gmail addresses. I'd apologize for the inconvenience, but it ain't my fault some $*&#$%*&^ idiots are spoofing gmail addresses for spamming purposes. So, if you use gmail (and I do too) then you'll have to let me sign you up manually. Just send an e-mail to the address above and I'll get you going ASAP (which is a widely varying amount of time - depending on a number of factors)

Hello everyone...

I an brand new to the forum, and this is my 1st post. - I'm headed to Mozambique in July-August, 2008 for Hippo, Cape buffalo, Waterbuck, and then I will transfer to northern SA for Eland and Kudu.

When I shoot I want the critter to stop. Accordingly, I believe in Randy Garrett's ammunition (www.GarrettCartridges.com) and will use it throughout my African hunt. Having used Garrett ammo in Canada and Argentina (black bear & Asiatic buffalo), I know that a 500+ grain 45/70 bullet is a proven 'stopper'.

I shoot a scoped 45/70 Marlin 'Cowboy' with a 26" bbl, or a Jim West's scoped (Marlin) "Co-Pilot" 18.5" bbl - depending on how I have to travel.

I look forward to discussions on the forum...
