Gents,
I'd appreciate info on the different versions of BLR that have been available over the years, and an explanation the main differences between them.
I'm looking to acquire one in 358 but not sure which one and what to look for.

Re: Help needed with BLR variants
Production of the BLR, which had the mag that extended below receiver, begain in 1969. The BLR 81 started in 1981 with some minor changes including a flush mag. The Lightning BLR (aluminum receiver) came on the scene in 1995 and is still being produced. The last 2 models had the nose of the hammer that pivoted adding a safety feature, but I don't know for certain when it was introduced. I'm partial to the first model.

Re: Help needed with BLR variants
If I were to buy a 358 Win BLR today as my first BLR, I would buy the current production takedown.
I've had 3 total and still have two, all in 358 Win. Mine are pre-81. As the pre's have been out of production for over twenty five years, I'd buy the one I could get repaired if necessary. Magazines for the new ones can be bought for $40 and the old ones are $80+ when you can find them. The locking lugs on the new ones lock directly into the barrel, the old ones lock into the receiver.

Re: Help needed with BLR variants
I have a blr I just bought that is the 358 win, pistol grip , takedown. I bought it for hog hunting. I really like it. Don't know about the other models, but this one is a fine gun.
Re: Help needed with BLR variants
I don't mean to hyjack your thread but I'm curious, can swap barrels on the BLR takedowns? Say interchange any of the 243-308-358 1/2s onto a 308 reciever? However, I'd bet I can't order just the barrels for less than the cost of a new gun.
Re: Help needed with BLR variants
Yes, barrel swaps would be easy. Pricey, but easy. Don't forget the 7mm-08.53CHEV wrote:I don't mean to hyjack your thread but I'm curious, can swap barrels on the BLR takedowns?
