OT -- I probably shouldn't have done it, but I did.

Post by Doc Hudson »

I got a telemarketer call this morning. It came at the wrong time and I gave it to that blank-dashed Indian with both barrels.

When he eventually responded to my "Hello," you could hear Bombay or New Delhi in his voice and he intorduced himself as "Mark." Ever notice how these Indian telemarketers almost invariably call themselves "Mark?"

I rather rudely asked why all blank-dashed Hindus called themselves 'Mark?" When he started sputtering, I told him not to deny it, I recognized the accent. Then I told him that if his company wanted my business, they'd better have an American call me from an American call center. I then suggested a physical impossibility and hung up on him. (Anyone else miss the satisfaction of slamming down a receiver on a telephone?)

Like I said, I probably shouldn't have done it, but I am absolutely sick and tired of barely comprehensible Indian telemarketers calling to try selling me something I don't want.

I sure wish the "No Call List" really worked.

Yep - he's just trying to make a living.

He can't help where he was born, what language he grew up speaking, or what career options, if any, he's presented with in his country.

Most of all, he can't help the fact that we've sold our collective U.S. souls to politicians who tax and regulate us to the point that our companies have to turn to overseas outfits to get their work done.

Still, I do like your phrase "blank-dashed" - he may not have deserved it, but 90% of politicians and 60% of voters DO...

I had to call an "AOL" technician monday night for a problem I was having !

Anyway I was mildly surprised to get someone in about 3 minutes .
But they weren't hindu ! She had a very pretty voice and I asked her where in USA her office was ? She told me it was at the old Clark Air Force base in Angelas City Philippines !

Now I will talk to all the cute little filipina's they wanna put on technician lines !

It's not discrimination if their JOB is to communicate verbally in English but they are incompetent & or unintelligible.

Clear enunciation is a skill like any other. I don't care what your accent is as long as your enunciation is intelligible...

The do-not-call list quit working for me about 6 months after signing up.
all calls on the house phone go to the message center. I have one friend
and my mom who still call the house (trying to get them to change),
otherwise maybe two calls a month that i need to pick up. Yeah I still
monitor the calls but 9 out of 10 don't leave messages anymore.

Only rarely does my cell have garbage calls.

The do not call list works fine for me except for the infernal order of police. I think it might be about time for a law suit for them.

On halloween I set up the office LCD projector on rear projection and had the original 1962 "Zatoichi" playing as I waited in vain - (and a Hakama) to pass out candy.

Maybe the kids were freaked out by the Katana, but I doubt it.

WELL old ironsights , are you and I the ony ones with Hakamas? Zatoichi Hmm, I must be blind to have missed that one :D
I actualy have fun with the telemarketers I keep them on for as long as I can ( as long as I have the time !) THEY are paying for the call and the longer they are on the more they pay .
They finally realize ( after I ask them about what kind of car they drive , and where do they live and if they are married and what they had for breakfast ) that I am not going to buy their product and im NOt going to give to the Fraternal Oder of Police ( even though i'm a member )
and then they try to get off FASt! Then THEY put me on THEIR do not call list .

I have never worn a hakama, I've only worn gi's. I do have a genuine Katana though. WWII furniture. I need to get the dog gone inscription read. For all I know I could own a blade worth 10 original 1886's, or more.

I actually prefer my "zatoichi" style 24" straight blade than my Katana.

Though if I were flush, I wouldn't mind a Cold Steel "Dragonfly" Wakazashi...

But I really wish they would do a modern "Cold Steel" 1055 Zatoichi with Composite scabbard/cane. I find the inverted style much more conducive to Aiki-ken...

Can't remmember the name of the film , but Ashwayria Rhae (spelling is probably incorrect) was the leading actor so to speak !
She was Miss Universe or Miss World about 6 or 7 years ago !And that was my reason for watching the film !

Well, l will admit that dealing with some of the folks can be trying. The speak Anglo-Indian which is hard to uderstand unless you have spent some time in INdia and get the hang of it. The fellow may very well have been a Christian (there are many million Christians in India) or a Muslim, or a Siek, or a Parse, or a Buddist. There are many other large religious group in India other than Hindu.

While these folks can be trying and I have been known to disconnet politely.. I don't think I would have been that rude to a chap trying to support his family the best he can.

Exactly so. I made a call to Dell Computers, earlier today. Understood about five words of the ~100 spoken to me, before she realized that communication was impossible. Immediately got passed to a colleague who could speak clearly. It's irrelevant where she came from, or what nationality, or how hard she was trying.

What such situations are is one thing: poor hiring screening on the part of the company looking to fill a speaking role with a person who cannot do so clearly or effectively. Discrimination? No, failure to make distinctions between effective and not, actually.
