That's old technology. This British job, circa 1800, is a real canal aqueduct. It's still in service, for pleasure boaters. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0d/WalesC0047.jpg/180px-WalesC0047.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8b/Under_Pontcysyllte.jpg/180...

In recent years, they've made available a wide range of brass for obsolete cartridges. Hopefully this is a sign they are catching up on all their orders and will return to making brass for the older guns.

Re: OT - Double rifle caliber for
I've never understood is the price for doubles 1) They are fairly low volume production, so you end up with more hand labor and less automation. 2) You're pretty much buying two complete rifles on one stock. 3) The barrels are traditionally soldered together. To get them to "regulate" to ...

My "want" changes every few weeks. I imagine I've wanted each of the main styles at one time or another. My current "want" is an 1886 replica in .38-56 Improved with a half mag. and a long half-round barrel. By this time next month I'm sure I'll be craving something else -- that'...

Thanks for the pointer to the review. It's good to hear that Chiappa can make good firearms. Will you be getting one of their 1886s for review? I had long wondered how one would use the forend to help pull the rifle into your shoulder. To my surprise I found there is a lock that keeps the forend forward until after the hammer flies. I handled one of these for the first time last week. It was a well worn 760 in .30-06. I don't believe I've ever worked a smoother rifle action, at least not in a repeater. While I still find the 1886 more intriguing and certainly better looking, I admit a certain attraction to the Remington. What a...

I could be tempted by a long barreled 1886 in .358, with the soft tip bullets from Hornady, or with simple flat nosed bullets.

Thanks for the replies. It was a modern extra-light I handled yesterday at a local gun shop, and it got me thinking about what one could do with such an action. For the modern 1886 replicas, what is the maximum cartridge length which can be accommodated? Re: How is this idea for a 38-40 levergun?
What sort of performance do you want from your .38-40? Uberti will have to proof their .357 Mag 73s for the European .357 rating of 44,000 psi. This suggests their action is strong enough for warmer loadings in the .38-40. The .38 is a much larger diameter, so you certainly won't be able to go to 44...
