SInce you already have a 'carbine' type gun that can flatten whitetail out to 100 yards, I'd get the larger full-size Marlin (I'd get it in .444 though, but that's another story). Anyway, no sense going for the .454 if its only realy advantage is trading off a slight amount of power for 'handiness' ...

I used to have one, too. We used to find pig iron balls, about 1/4" in diameter, around the train tracks. Apparently that's how they ship iron, in bulk, in open cars, and as the cars get jostled some of the iron balls bounce out. I would fill a bag of these and they made grrreat slingshot ammo...

1. Practical Answer - order an extra barrel in whatever configuration you want - 'normal' or 'target/bull' or 'carbon fiber/lined' or whatever. Install that and you're good to go - PLUS have an extra barrel. You can then slowly experiment and probably 'do' that old barrel yourself and learn/have fun...
