I have the 1st type in .358 and with 200-225 jacketed bullets it'll group about 1.5" at 100 yards. I haven't shot jacketed in it in several years as my preference is 200-225 grain cast bullets around 2000 fps which group around 2''. They're great hunting rifles in close cover!

smokenrust, The 32-40 was designed in 1884 as a target round for Ballard rifles and used a 165 grain lead bullet with 40 grains of Fg blackpowder for a velocity of around 1400-1450 fps. Both Marlin and Winchester chambered the round in their levers and Winchester later loaded a high speed loading of...

The second model F was introduced in 1955 and discontinued in 1973. The pic looks like an F. Right side of barrel will be marked as such and it should have a barrel boss for the rear sight. Looks like the stamp is 17G which would be 1955, the year of introduction. Nice rifles BTW.

I think the 30-30 would be a better heavy game or bear defense carbine if we could get proper bullets for the task. I always wanted to try a 180-190 flatnose FMJ. I see Hawk makes a 190 JSP and that Buffalo Bore loads it to about 2100 fps. Should be good stuff, albeit pricey pricey on both counts. ...

According to the Belding & Mull Handbook of 1949, a 110 grain jacketed bullet plus 16.4 grains of Hercules Unique will produce 2205 fps out of the .30-40 Krag. I know the .30-40 is not the .308 but, the case capacities are similar. The .308 averages 49.6 grains of water while the .30-40 averages...

I'd say you are shooting pretty good with open sights. The hint of using a 6 o'clock hold is a good one and if you smoke your sights, you'll be able to see them a little plainer. My 1947 .250-3000 loves 32 grains of IMR-3031 with the 87 grain Speer. I only shoot two groups off the bench with it and they went 1.62" for the first and .570" for the 2nd. I proclaimed it good enough for my hunting using a peep sight.
