Just last year I shot up some 38/56 Winchester ammo Both WW and Rem Peters some BP some smokeless some lead bullets and some jacketed It all shot well the BP actualy was more accurate than the smokeless 38/56 ammo has not been manufactured since 1937 so it was that old or older .

I like AA 5744 too and most of my 38-55 loads are with that
That said 2400 and 4759 are EXTREMELY close to the burning rate of Black Powder and do very good work in lots of straight walled cases

I am shooting bullets from that mold in 94 COWBOY COMMEMORTIVE MOdel 20 in I use 30 grains of Varget . It is a Hunting load and shoots around an inch + at one hundred yards . Shoots about 1950fps Mine are 195
W/ lube and gaas check ( Lee LA with two coats ) They drop at 310 from my mold

Shelby Foote also has a book JUST on Gettysburg Called "The Stars in their Courses" I have read everything By Foote wonderful authur But if its really Gettysburg that your interested in the the Book I mentioned above by Coddington is the beat very easy and good read to not dry

YOu are right sir bullet construction has a lot to do with it . An AWFUL LOT . I touched on that on the one post when i mentioned the difference on the hollow points and the FMJs. bullet construction my be one of the more limiting factors in penetration . More than the velocity or mass .
