I can only say that shot placement seems to be more important from my limited experience. I took 4 total hits with a .44 Mag to do what 1 hit with a .223 did. Shot placement was the difference.

I took 5 shots from a scoped .44 mag to kill my first hog. The second took only one shot from my Puma .480. I added an insurance shot with the Puma, but that wide flat point 425 grain cast lead slug from Cast Performance did what 5 .44s didn't do. It knocked the hog off its feet instantly.
