Interesting (to me) side note -- Dixon was one of only eight civilians ever to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Prior to WW1 the medal was awarded in a manner we would not recognize today. Whole units, often not that distinguished, were given the medal during the Civil War and Indian wars, sometimes p...

Their retort is a neat idea, makes the process easy, But it's not all that difficult to accomplish if you keep in mind the substance of it -- combustion with limited oxygen. The balls were larger-than-bore-size; upon firing they were swaged down as they entered the bore, sealing everything nicely, thank you. The chamber was over-filled with powder, the excess being "cut off" by the rising breech screw, resulting in a filled, if not exactly ramrod-packed, chamb...

I've always had a long-barreled rifle or two, mainly because I always had at least one spot I hunted that might -- just maybe -- provide a 400-yard shot. Pure speculation, but just looking at the two designs it seems pretty certain that the Big Boy action is the stronger of the two. The question then becomes -- so what? Both are more than strong enough for the cartridges for which they are chambered.
