Re: 5.5" redhawk article

I had a 44 mag 7 1/2 inch Redhawk that was one of my best shooting guns. I decided I want something in the 5 inch range and sent it off to Bowen to convert to 45 colt too. It is my best shooting revolver. After reading this I am going to have to try some heavy bullets. I think I have some heavy cast...

Re: What's currently your best hunting rifle for your area?

Also from Maine where 100 yards is a long shot. I the mountains where I spend a lot of my time there are some big open hardwood ridges where you might get a longer shot. I have always been interested in deer rifles since my dad took me out before I was even legal to hunt. At 10 I got to carry his do...

Re: Favorite Double Action Woods Bumming Gun

The only double action I still have is this Bowen 45 Colt. I generally shoot 250 or 300 XTP's with 2400 0r HS-6. It now wears some custom target grips I found on Ebay. The grips are a bit bulky but improve my shooting with this gun.

Re: Signpost Buck Rubs

It is a red dot...Trijicon RMR. EGW makes a mount that fits in the scope mount holes. Very quick and accurate for me. That gun is a favorite as it maintains zero and shoots almost all bullet weights to the same point of impact. So far only 240 grain Woodleigh's shoot a couple inch's low. Everything ...

Signpost Buck Rubs

Seeing if I cab post pictures without Photobucket. This is my Winchester 54 30-06 next to a signpost rub way back in the mountains. Second is another signpost. I always like finding these but never see the bucks at them during the day. I have had game cameras on them and they usually show up around ...

Re: Savage 99 30-30

Yup, another Mainer here...live in the western foothills and love to hunt the western mountains. Deer are scarce where I hunt but so are people. Those are some nice pumps. I like the 14 more than the 141 but not from any real experience. I have everything for loading the 35 Remington from my Contend...

Re: Savage 99 30-30

Very nice Savage Sixgun. I had a 300 99 that was custom stocked and had the same peep sight. Liked it a lot but sold it and went to a custom stocked 88 with a muzzle brake that really works well. Mounted a mini red dot pistol sight (Holosun 509T) in the rear two scope mount holes. It is very fast to...

Re: Savage 99 30-30

I did not buy it. The stock had been whittled down and was way to low for me. It was a takedown which is what I wanted. I want a takedown so I can carry it in a pack while woods loafing. Would also consider a Remington 141 or 14 pump. I might go 35 Remington on one of those though....

Re: For love of the 357 mag

Thank you! Great article. Reminds me of one of Francis Sells article on common sense deer rifles. Along the same lines where he spoke about the priority of bullet placement. Cartridges' thought to be too small for deer in the magnum times are ones he recommended. I have had 357's in the past and am ...

Re: Picked up a beater

Really like that full mag 71. I have a second 71 rifle that was re-stocked and am thinking of making it a carbine. If you were going to have this done who would you recommend?? If I were just shortening the barrel there is a local gunsmith quite capable. Adding a full length magazine I am not so sur...

Re: What was the first gun you bought?

First gun and the start of reloading at the same time. It was a Springfield 03a3 converted to 30-338 with dies and brass. Had a Bausch and Lomb scope in one of those spring loaded mounts. It came with some reloading data for 4350. I was probably around 14 or 15 at the time. Just had to have a magnum...

Case Flaring

I am new to cast bullets in rifles but have done them in revolvers for years. I am going to load up some cast in the 348 and maybe the 405. Neither die set has a flaring die so I have ordered a universal flaring die. Is flaring always needed for cast? The bullets I am using are gas checked. Thanks f...

Really like these posts where information is shared from a lot a lot of extensive and detailed testing. I have never had a 33 but always thought it was a great cartridge. I grew up with a 348 in the house which covered the big bore lever action needs. The 33 and 1886 is a very well thought of combin...

Re: Concealed Carry

CZ P07 with a Trijicon SRO. Worked over by Cajun Gun works. They do excellent work. Sometimes a Glock 20 10mm. I am pretty tall and thin and built different enough so I can conceal bigger pistols. For woods walks I often have two or three in the pack and rotate them throughout the day. I do a lot of...

Marlin 444 First Year Production

I have one with the Monte Carlo stock and 24 inch barrel. Shoots very well but there are a couple things I don't like. The forearm sling swivel stud gives the hand a good wack when I place my hand where I shoot it best. anyone have a good remedy for that other than grinding off the stud? The lever i...

Favorite 348 Loads

For what it is worth I thought I would share some 348 loads that have worked well for me. Especially like 59 grains of IMR 4350 over a 200 Hornady or Remington. I have used this one for a lot of years. Same bullets 53 of IMR 4895 shoots to the same place and as well. Both are a grain under max per m...

I handgun hunted for many years and always shot revolvers. Bowen Ruger 357 Blackhawk converted to 41 mag. Has an extra long cylinder and can shoot 275 grain bullets. A 4 inch barrel and was a handful with full power loads. Next a Freedom Arms 454 also a handful. Then a Bowen 45 Colt Redhawk. About 4...

I have just found this forum a couple days ago and decided to subscribe. Lots of really great information here for guns similar to my own. I grew up admiring my Dad's 348 which I now have. Towards the end of his hunting he had a 2x Redfield long eye relief scope mounted to the barrel. May have ruine...
