Sorry about all the upside down and sideways, I'm just lucky to post them, much less correct it.

20220813_173358.jpg The rifle in the first pic of this thread, the cover photo, is Doug Turnbulls own late 1800's Mod 86 he restored and bored to 475 Turnbull. I'm 99% sure that's the rifle he used to take a Dall Sheep (could've been a Big Horn Sheep, but I believe a Dall) in the far north. It does...

Re: New rifle. Not a levergun.
Great kill pic Flint! In my younger days deer hunting around here, 70s-80's, I bumped into a lotta hunters carrying either the Auto version or the pump action version of those Remingtons, several different model numbers for them thru the years.

Re: New rifle. Not a levergun.
I got this one back around may, also for $600 at a local PS. It's a Mod 742, not sure the difference, cosmetics I'd say? I've not shot it at long range, but it's a great deer rifle within reasonable ranges!

I just got my Guns&Hunting Issue of Sporting Classics Magazine yesterday. I haven't read any yet, only thumbed thru it so far. It looks like it might be the best Leverguns articles since Rifle Magazines special editions? It's not that in depth I'm sure, but it sure looks interesting, Lotta history a...

Re: What is your most useful levergun?
With useful being the key word, my Marlin 336 wins by a fraction. I've got the open barrel sights fixed to where for me they're very precise out to 100yds+. I filed the rear sight down flat, so there's only a small shallow U left. Filed a slight flat spot on the front sight. And I have a Marbles Tan...

Re: Rabbit load.
Oh OK, I see. I've never tried that, loading a bullet backwards! What, you never loaded HBWC’s backwards for a .38 spl defense load? It’s all I use for my 2” revolvers. Even with today’s magic bullets I don’t think there’s a better load for snubbies. No, I hadn't tried any this stuff. All my reload...

Re: How many hunt with a Winchester 71
I hunted with a Browning 71 quite a bit for a couple years. Shot 6 or 7 deer (crop damage permits) and a black bear. Beautiful rifle that handled great but as OldWin said, it's a lot of iron to pack around when you're hunting small big game. I'm a walking hunter and it wasn't doing anything for me ...

And as far as battery life, I've had great life out of all mine. The Moultrie been there since mid March, last I checked I believe it showed 90% still, that's 8AA battery's. Most use 8, but the Browning is only one I've seen which holds 6 AA.

Re: I've had it with trail cams...
Doc, I had 2 Stealth Cams that I used for several years, one was good, one was not much. They where identical, cheap. Now I've run one the cheapest Moultries I could get at Walmart, aprox $50, and it's been great, really perfect. I had a really cheap Tasco a buddy gave me that seemed to be doing goo...

Re: Short range report with the .357s
A 6" S&W 357 was always my pistol, mine a Mod 19. I kinda abandoned it when I started packing 4" 45acp, because it's so light and handy, but the S&W is my first love! Good shooting!

One of the new products I have started using for a special purpose, Gun Medic. To clean a bolt, trigger assembly, tight spots in fishing reels, etc. Spray it out good with Gun Scrubber, the aerosol kind, which I've used for years, it is under pressure. Just recently I got a Tikka Bolt Action made in...

Re: Gun cleaning
Good looking setup YK. I'm a firm believer in Ballistol. To clean any barrel I've shot, swab it first with Hoppes #9 PS, brush it. Then do the same again with Ballistol. If I know I'll be shooting it again within months, I just dry it, I'm done. If it's gonna be a while, I'll go over it last with oi...

Looks like rabbit medicine to me! If you're looking to do any testing with any other bullets, I've recently tried some Speer 130gr H.C. with a minimum load of 3031. In my 20" 94, they're grouping at squirrel hunting accuracy at 30-40yds. Didn't chrono them, didn't matter.

I've probably asked this before, but I've never started or seen a thread about him. It's obvious from reading 3 of Townsend Whelens books, numerous other articles and articles other people have written about him. But best I can tell, Whelens first trip ever to the far north- B.C., was in fact the tr...
