I see this cartridge as being more at home in a light bolt gun. But I’ve never fired it.

I just like the idea of a 240 or 300 gr XTP at over 1900 fps.

I would not shoot anything larger than deer. Nor would I stretch shots out beyond 200 yards or so. Just not enough penetration. I do want to try the Nosler Partition bullet. I also would not take a chancy shot or shoot a moving deer. But if a man is a good shot and does not suffer from buck fever, i...

Re: .222 Remington/.223 Remington for deer

Won’t kill a deer at all.

This is an older deer and he never developed brow tines. I shot him at about 160 yards and the 60 gr Hornady bullet made pulp out of his heart and lungs. Nice exit hole.

He field dressed without the head at 112 pounds.

That’s great Jim. I’m reluctant to file the front sight just yet. It’s close enough for now and I want to see it over a couple of hundred more rounds.

Paul Persinger has my Colt and I’m not sure when I’ll get it back. But I’m happy carrying and shooting this USFA while I wait.

I’ll cut my front sight on my USFA but I really want to nail down the load. I may be getting really close. I was shooting a variety of bullets over various charges of TiteGroup last weekend. Here is what the barrel looked like after 90 rounds with hard cast bullets. It cleaned up with the first patch.

By all means slug the bore. Look at the crown too. Hold the GUN EXACTLY the same every shot, with you hand holding the forearm. Some 2piece stocked guns don't like sand bags/rests. Look at the forearm cap, is it touching the barrel? Try different powders. Reduce loads if at max. All good advice. Pa...

I’ve got a couple of Rossi rifles but they are in different calibers (.357 and.44 Magnum). Either of them will meet your criteria of sub 2 inch groups at 50 yards. So I think it would be probable that your rifle can get there too. I’d run a soft round ball through the bore to get a measurement and s...

A 60 or so grain bullet is likely the heaviest that can be shot in a rifle with standard twist. Shooting 70 or more grain projectiles requires a shorter twist to properly stabilize them. What is a “standard twist” for a .223 anymore? I believe my rifle has a 1/9 inch twist. No stabilization issues.

A whitetail isn’t that hard to kill. Last year I took my buck with a .45 Colt load that is safe in a Single Action Army.

You just have to punch a hole through them in the right place. If it’s accurate, you can certainly do the job.

While I don’t know what kind of velocity that load might generate, I know several guys who load their .30-06 down to .30-30 levels so that their kids can shoot deer without the heavier recoil.

Makes good sense to me.
