My research indicates that Remington made some guns for prison use that had short barrels and a modified choke. But I always thought they had a bead sight.

Remington 870 with rifle sights and modified choke

Why would they make such a thing? Factory sights 18 inch barrel and modified choke? Might be good for buckshot but then you don’t need rifle sights. Background: I’ve been picking up 870 riot guns when I find them cheap but in good shape. Only qualifications are that they are less than $400 and have ...

One “new” cartridge I wish I had been in on was the .480 Achilles.

That one fascinated me because it wasn’t a rip snorter but rather a balanced cartridge in a useful power range.

I was looking for a replacement for Unique. It looks like TiteGroup is a versatile powder for my range of loads. What I find interesting is that I’ve fired many thousands of rounds through Rugers over many years and never had given any thought to this possibility. I prefer the older 3 screw guns, not because I thought that they were better but because I like the way the action feels. Perhaps it’s not a big deal.

That’s not true. I started shooting a big frame Vaquero last night and on the eighth round the transfer bar broke. It tied up the works right there.

A replacement is not expensive but that would sure leave a man in a bad way if it broke out on the prairie.
