Re: Favorite.45 Colt bullet to be used interchangeably

I’m afraid the only .45 ACP I’ve loaded in years has been with a 200 gr H&G 68.

You can push that bullet hard like Jeff Cooper suggested and you can easily kill deer or hogs with it.

I just like a sixgun better these days.

The other bullet that I load is the Hornady .454 diameter swaged 255 gr Cowboy bullet.

It doesn’t look like much but I can push it with 8 gr of Unique (certainly not a weak cowboy action load) and it shoots cleanly and accurately in sixguns and leverguns.

Favorite.45 Colt bullet to be used interchangeably

With the carbine and a sixgun? As much as I like the RCBS .45 SAA bullet, I have found that it’s a hair too long to feed through a 1873 style levergun. I really don’t want to have anything on the shelf that doesn’t feed or work in one or two particular guns. So I’m willing to compromise…..if I have ...

The one thing I love about the .45 Colt is how I have available bullets that really fill out the chambers.

With normal loads this seems to true up the bullets with the forcing cone and contributes to consistency.

I wish I had a .430 bullet like this.

I often carry a SAA with only five rounds available. But I would think that a Charter Arms Bulldog would certainly do the trick.

But a .38 snub nosed revolver leaves a man far from disarmed.

Nothing fancy but a good Charter Arms Bulldog is a fight stopper.

I loaded a hundred or so .44 cases tonight with a .431 diameter RNFP 240 gr machine cast bullet over 6 grains of Unique.

It doesn’t go very fast but it will poke holes right through most things.

Unique isn’t magic but at 7.5 gr in the .44 Special it seems to be remarkably consistent.

I think the Model 10 is the sweet spot for the .38 Special cartridge. Small enough for comfortable carry and big enough to shoot well. The triggers on the older guns are particularly easy to work with.
