I think that would work well. I’m thinking that I might do the same with my 1917 Smith revolver.
I think 9 gr of Unique is the load for my SAA and 73 carbine

Re: An old experiment that I need to get back to
Experiment continues. I loaded up and fired 66 rounds of 240 gr XtPs over 19 grains of 296. A pretty stout .44 Special load, but this gun loves it. Got the gun good and hot and tried to iron out the bore. Skeeter loads already shoot better but I think I need to get any jacketed bullet fouling out be...

I think the 86 was more popular in some places than others.
You don’t see a lot of these rifles in the hands of Texas Rangers for example. But there are some.
For example one of my Texas Ranger relatives clearly has an 86 in his hand in this photo.

If your throats are too tight you can ream them out yourself by renting a reamer on line. I’ve done a few and this is easy and difficult to screw up. Or you can just send the cylinder to a number of places and they will ream those throats for you. https://singleactions.proboards.com/thread/34523/lub...

I haven’t read the article but I think it’s premature. Think about how many companies are making .44 Special and Magnum revolvers these days. Ruger, Henry, Rossi and Smith & Wesson are making .44 Magnum leverguns. .44s aren’t going anywhere. As long as there are rednecks with Super Blackhawks th...

I have one more to pick up and I should have that one in June. A 7.5 inch flattop Bisley Ruger. A 325 grain bullet over 10 gr of Unique is a very powerful load that is easy to shoot and has reasonable muzzle blast. Jeff Quinn came up with this load and it’s a good one.

I’m afraid the only .45 ACP I’ve loaded in years has been with a 200 gr H&G 68.
You can push that bullet hard like Jeff Cooper suggested and you can easily kill deer or hogs with it.
I just like a sixgun better these days.

The other bullet that I load is the Hornady .454 diameter swaged 255 gr Cowboy bullet.
It doesn’t look like much but I can push it with 8 gr of Unique (certainly not a weak cowboy action load) and it shoots cleanly and accurately in sixguns and leverguns.

With the carbine and a sixgun? As much as I like the RCBS .45 SAA bullet, I have found that it’s a hair too long to feed through a 1873 style levergun.
