Re: Lets talk rifle loads
I'm not pushing the .45 Colt as hard as some folks do. I'm fond of a 270 SAA bullet sized to .454 over 13 gr of HS-6 at the moment. My Rossi 92 loves it as does my Ruger Blackhawk. Not too much, but plenty. But I also like shooting the Hornady 255 gr Cowboy bullet over 8.5 gr of Unique. Seems to sho...

Unfortunately fear makes people do stupid things. And there is a lot of fear out there. Fear is almost always an overreaction to an uncertainty. I don't intend to give up anything. I haven't curtailed enjoying my shooting because of ammo shortages or covid. I'm just living my life. I think about thi...

I love those 95s. I have a Browning in .30-06 that I have never fired. It is in sporting configuration. I suppose I don't really need the gun as I have yet to do anything with it. First world problems.

And here I thought this was going to be about Big-Nose Kate! Are you still taking her shooting? It has been passed through a couple of Shootists and it has been used in Alaska and Arizona, and now it lives in Texas (with me).

Re: How much is enough?
I was watching the movie "Silverado" the other day. I thought it interesting when Danny Glover's character asked if the bad guys knew what a Henry rifle could do in the hands of a man who knew how to use it. I thought to myself that we can do much better with a .45 Colt today. I wonder if ...

How much is enough?
I’m having a lot of fun going back and reading posts from some time back. While we all have our favorite cartridges (In my case the .50-70) I wonder how many of us hunt with something that we decided was well matched to the actual hunting that we do? Last week I shot a cow (didn’t want to but I had ...

Re: Favorite combinations. (Rifle and handgun)
My handgun shooting limits me to 40-50 yards. But I can reach out there with the .45 Colt in a rifle. I load a lot of the Hornady Cowboy bullets over 8.5 gr of Unique and I treat it like a big .22. Seems to shoot well in my revolvers and both of my leverguns. I don't think that load is too stressful...

Favorite combinations. (Rifle and handgun)
I like the idea of using the same cartridge for bumming around with both my rifle and revolver.
But when I carried a gun for serious business my levergun was a .30-30 because of the extra power and penetration.
This combo of a .44 Special and a .30-30 made sense.

Re: 45 colt revolver vs carbine
In both my Linebaugh Ruger and the Rossi carbine, I had to increase the diameter of the 270 SAA bullet [Montana Bullet Works] to .454 in order to get them to operate like they should. I had leading problems in both guns. But the .454 bullets seem to seal the gasses behind each and accuracy really tu...

I absolutely love the .45-70. But either cartridge will do the job.
The .45-70 has just been a good friend for too many years. Now, if I could get a levergun chambered in my beloved .50-70, I would jump on it fast!

Back around 1989, I shot a buck in East Texas with a .308 165gr Nosler Balistic Tip over a heavy charge of 4064. Thinking about selling all my black guns
Frankly, I am of the age that I do not see myself taking to the streets with an AR-15. If I need a gun, I would probably be better served with a 12 ga and a .30-30. When I go out to the ranch, I always take a lever or bolt gun and a .45 Colt revolver. I seem to wear a .357 more than anything else. E...
