A Quick Look at a few reloading manuals show the 35 Remington 200 grain bullet as the heaviest load. There may be other sources out there that go beyond that I don’t have though.

That “oval P” on the barrel indicates it is a “Postal Order” replacement barrel not original to the gun. Winchester sold them through the mail. I have a 32-40 with a nickel steel oval P barrel. Bought it as a shooter as the bore is pristine. The gun is from 1907 but the barrel is way later.

Yes, the 30-30 ammo with silver tip bullets was very popular. Yellow box with bold Silvertip printed on front. I still have a few boxes stashed. The last I bought were the 76 Bicentennial red, white and blue box Silvertips. The cases are nickel plated with W 76 W stamped on head.

I have seen bores worse than that shoot pretty good. I would try a fast pistol powder like Unique that somewhat mimics black powder that “bumps up” the bullet diameter. Those cowboy loads are so anemic that little to no obturation takes place. Unique has gotten many a 32 WCF to shoot accurately.

Lost the 32-20 cylinder to my 32 Ruger Buckeye a few years ago. Never found it so I called Ruger to get it replaced and was told that gun had been so long out of production they would not even consider making a replacement cylinder. Guess I will just have to keep shooting 32 H&R.

At 76 I mostly limit the hand gun to Single Six and Mark 3 22 and Blackhawk Buckeye 32 H&R . The rifle I shoot most is the model 94 32-40 at 1400 fps. Shotgun for hunting only now. Still have some boomers in the safe though.

I must have gotten a good 10/22. Early one with nice wood and has functioned flawlessly for over 5000 rounds. Recently shot 100 rounds of CCI standard velocity at 100 yards 3 inch gong. My 1930 Model A Ford with points, condenser and coil should also work after EMP also. It did just strand me side the road though. Kept blowing a 30 amp fuse I installed to protect against electrical shorts. Turned out to be the amp meter shorted internally! Bypassed the meter and drove it home.

Griff, the Vermont legislature is in the process of passing legislation eliminating lead projectiles for all hunting . I tried some of the monolithic bullets we will have to use in my Browning A-Bolt 308 and the bullets tumbled. I bet our old Winchesters won’t like them either.

Shooting the old legacy calibers is only going to get more expensive. I just paid $102 for 2 boxes of new production Remington 32 Special. Had not seen any of that in North Western Vermont in 2 years. Back then I paid $26 a box.

Well those reformed “short” for 32-40 cases turns out to be a big plus. It allows 32 Special bullets to be crimped in the cannelure and still feed through a model 94 action. Try that with a 32-40 length case and the cartridge will jamb on top of the lifter.

Nothing wrong with those groups, especially off hand. I have the same gun and have never shot off hand that well. I have found the 32 H&R cylinder more accurate and I get better brass mileage. I have found 32-20 brass hard to get at times.

Shooters World Buffalo Rifle powder will sub for 5744. After I could no longer get 5744 I ordered Buffalo Rifle from Powder Valley. Use the same amounts of Buffalo Rifle powder as previous 5744 loads in my 38-55 and 45-70. The powder can label has loads printed right on the label.

I have been shooting and reloading the 38-40 for over 50 years and have never had a problem getting new brass to support the habit. Starline has been the best for me as I get more reloading life out of their cases. Load to sensible pressures and the cases just seem to keep going.

Model 55 Winchester Single Shot Automatic 22. Super accurate open sight 22. Father bought it for me around 1960. Shot a lot of squirrels, grouse and Snowshoe Hare with it. My son has it now and it is still as accurate as ever.

Yup,LGS near me has 24 boxes of 32 special, 30 of 10mm, 12 303 Brit., 20 300wsm, even a bunch of 28 gauge slugs. No 30-30 or other common loads. Another shop got in a case of WIN 38-55 last week. Half of it gone already at $50 a box. Forget 22lr,none to be had at any price around here.

Yup,I have also discovered you can do multiples if they are close to the same caliber. I did finally get the "proper" crimp dies for each case just to keep myself honest!
