Re: Trial No. 2 with powder coat
C.T.---the alloy I mainly use for pistol and rifle to about 1800fps is Wheelweights and Isotope alloy (96-3-1) in a 50/50 ratio. Any faster and its more of a cross of WW's and #2 with a little copper added (0.2%)

Re: Trial No. 2 with powder coat
I bake my powder coated boolits at 400 degrees. If I water quench them when casting, powder coating will negate the heat treating, but you can take the coated boolits right from the oven and quench in cold water to re heat treat them. You get your powder coating and hardness too. I have taken powder...

Looks like a "D" weight barrel on that thumper. My 375 H&H has the lighter "C" weight barrel. Think they had a run of 45-70's with the "C" weight barrel. Almost bought one, wish I would have. Would like a "D" weight barrel, or at least a "C" weig...

With gas checks, he should be fine. He can always water quench from the mould to get a harder bullet. The QL velicities predicted might be spot on or maybe a tad bit low. The big bore I was working with hit 1600fps. Pleasant load compared to the full throttle stuff.

Re: If you happen to have a .450-400 3-inch NE
Take this with a grain of salt, but I read somewhere, in the past, that the best load will be found around 90-95% fill to the base of the bullet. In a big bore rifle I was working with, I started around 45% and worked my way up. Best group was around 92%. The stuff is kind of unobtanium around here,...

Maybe 1/2 teaspoon of lemi-shine(I have read a 9mm case is plenty--don't want too much as it might start pulling zinc out of the alloy), 1/2 tablespoon of Dawn, and same of the car wash/wax in a gallon jug of water. When I wet tumble, I use lemi-shine, dawn, and auto liquid car wash/wax. The car stuff leaves a faint wax coating on the brass and the shine doesn't degrade much.

For crimped bullets you might try and seat just a fraction deeper to break the crimp. I often use a pair of plier type wire strippers to grab the bullet. Just put the round in the press, lower the handle, grab pullet and raise handle to pull bullet.

I wish I had a range around here to shoot IHMSA. Used to shoot it decades ago. Had a blast at it. Course, getting close to 70 now and the "dead frog" shooting position might be a bit more difficult now, not to mention iron sights are a bit harder to focus on.
