Re: Got some range time today

We were shooting Hornady 200s with IMR-4064 in the 71. I took a box of factory loads, but the rains came before we got to them.

Got some range time today

My son (26) and I went to the range today. Took the 1941 (20xxx) Model 71. We didn't shoot that one any better than usual, 4"-5" at 100 yds using the bolt peep sight. Then I broke out the Sako/Shilen .243 I've had for 30+ years. I shot 1" or a bit over, but my kid shot a 3-shot group ...

Re: GunBroker win 71 question

Don, My 1941 deluxe, 20xxx, is a "transition", so called because it has the short tang but still has the hammer with the fine knurling instaed of the later "serrated" hammer. Note that the Gunbroker 25xxx also has the knurled hammer, so it's a "transition" piece as well...

Re: Was your dad a hunter and gun collector?

My dad wasn't a big-time hunter, but we spent a LOT of time hunting woodchucks when I was growing up. Now, of course, I wish it had been even more. He was a gun collector, but only to the extent that a schoolteacher's salary would allow (moms didn't work in those days). He got me into relaoding when...

Don,
"As new", with the sling & swivels, a late (short tang) model, $3000 to $3500, with the high end reserved for a truly MINT specimen.

Victor's photos of the 3 types of Sako peep sights spurred me on to dig out the one I knew I had around here somewhere. Found it with only an hour or so of searching, it's a mint condition example of the 2nd type. Fully adjustable for windage and elevation (a big screw on each side, and a big screw ...

Re: I have the lever rifle pair I've been wanting! UPDATED PICS

Very nice rifles Victor, I've always liked the Finnwolf but never owned one. Those Sako peep sights are very pricey items, particularly the earlier type like the one you have on the .308. The later style is easier to find, they generally go for $50 to $75, usually at the high end of that range. Here...

Nice rifle, you'll enjoy hell out of it for years. Gonna load it up with IMR4064? That was the powder used in the original factory loads & I've always stuck with it, out of respect for the .348's "heritage" I guess.

You've got some very old cases there. The "UMC S H" cases are solid head, that's what the SH stood for. They were loaded by the old Union Metallic Cartridge Co., later bought by Remington. The USC Co are from the U.S. Cartridge Company, Lowell Mass. They went out of business in 1926. The &...

The ones I remember from the 60s came in a little cardboard can with a screw-on metal lid. In the cardboard can w...

Don, I found mine on ebay a few years ago, an RCBS. Somebody offered a regular 2-die FL set plus the extra neck sizer. Makes a lot of difference in reloading the .348, there's a lot less effort involved & the cases last a good deal longer when the brass doesn't get worked like it does in a FL di...

Rifle and Handloader magazines do very well on ebay, I filled in my sets of both that way. If I were selling any of those, I'd do it in lots of one year of issues per lot. The real large odd-lots don't seem to do quite as well. The couple of complete sets I have seen offered did quite well.

I'd say that's a hell of a buy. Nice old ones like that need a home where they're appreciated. I grew up shooting a 39 in the early 60s, serial number was "C195x" as I remember (could be mistaken). I think my dad said he had bought it in the early-to-mid 50s.

The expression has some meaning in New York state, where I grew up. You couldn't own a handgun without a CCW permit, and each handgun was individually listed on the permit itself. Before you could buy a new handgun, you had to get the make/model/serial no. from the dealer & go to the county seat...
