Re: Introduction and the .348

I could sell you a bag or two of new Winchester brass. I use only 250 grain Hawk bullets for my elk hunting and have had great results. The 348 has stout recoil and I doubt you would shoot it a lot. The brass is strong and will last for many re-loadings. I've been shooting mine for years and I'm sti...

Teflon tape and lead bullets

I just read Williamsons book Lever legacy. He claimed to have had great results in shooting cast bullets in rough bores. He would take two wraps around the bullet with teflon tape and then heat the tape with a butane lighter until the grease ring was clearly visible. He would then load them up with ...

Re: Need help loading 40-82

My post wasn't all that clear and in one matter inaccurate. I have used h-4198 in this rifle. Cow is indeed cream of wheat but I just checked my notes and found that in the 40-82 I used a 1&1/2 grain ball of cotton for a filler. I use cow in my 44-40's. 26&1/2 grains of h-4198 with the cotto...

Re: Need help loading 40-82

I have gotten good results using 26 grains of 4198 with enough cow to give a compressed load. About 28 grains of 4198 is a common load but gave erratic velocity in my rifle which is a model 1885. An old Handloader magazine had a little data that gave sup rising loads such as 62 grains of H-4350 for ...

Re: 348 Winchester

I just noticed the 348 win. topic thats been going on for some time. I've owned a model 71 win. for a couple of years now and have hunted with it. My rifle was drilled for scope mounts and I've thought about selling it and buying one that is original. Well that's not going to happen. If it was all o...

Re: any body shoot a 25-20?

I have a model 53 that shoots both cast and jacketed bullets well. With the 85 grain Meister bullets I use 6.5 grs. of H-4227 and with 75 gr. Speer bullets 12.5 grs. of 1680 have been very accurate. The 1680 load was also very good in a model 92 I once owned. I use the rifle for ground squirrels in ...

Re: 40-82 loading data

Thanks for the information. I did slug the barrel [408] and ordered [410] 265 grain bullets from Beartooth. I don't cast bullets and hope these work. Your 28 grain load of 4198 is very close to what others have recommended. Thanks for your attention. Kyle

40-82 loading data

I just got a model 1885 in 40-82. I'm really looking forward to shooting it and have ordered some 265 grain lead bullets. I've got a lot of H-322 powder which I think would be an excellent powder for this caliber but I can't find any data for it. Does anybody have some data for this powder. It would...

front sight issue

I recently bought a Colt Lightning src. It's in great shape and shoots very well. Even though it has the original carbine flip up rear sight someone felt the need to file down the front sight...... a lot. Aiming with the front blade as low in the rear sight as possible the rifle is 18 inches high at...
