Took antelope with old 99
A few days ago I shot a doe antelope with my 99eg .250 and its vintage Lyman receiver sight. It made for a fun hunt. I had to sneak around, do some stalking, and pick my shot carefully. (I took my shot at about 100 yds.) It feels good just to carry that old rifle around. I could use a finer front si...

reduced loads for .250-3000
Does anyone have any suggestions for reduced loads for the .250 using the Speer 75 grain flatnose. I have a supply on hand for my .25-35, and I thought a light load might be useful for rabbits and squirrels.

Re: Calibers for 1866 Winchester
I had no idea anyone had made .44 rimfire ammo in the last 80 years. Even if you could convince someone to manufacture it again, it would make for some pretty expensive shooting. It looks like I should be looking at the '73 models. An friend of mine who collects Winchesters says I should just get an...

Re: Calibers for 1866 Winchester
Thanks for the information Mike D. I thought I remembered seeing one for sale that was chambered for .44 centerfire, and being uninformed, I assumed it was .44 WCF.

Calibers for 1866 Winchester
I am interested in getting a Winchester clone of some type, but part of the fun for me is being historically accurate. Was the beautiful 1866 ever produced in any calibers other than the .44 rimfire? I would like to have a 44-40 or 38-40 if one would fit.

1 in 14 twist in .250-3000
In getting ready for Missouri deer season, I'm trying to find the right load for my '48 Savage 99 in .250-3000. It won't shoot the 100 grain Rem. power points. I bought a box and tried several combination of powders. 8" groups. Today I tried the 100 grain Win. Silvertip factory load. No luck th...

Re: Heresy/Rechambering a Savage 99
I've got a natural: .219 Zipper. You could barrel it with a fast twist to shoot 70 grain .224 bullets and have a .22 hi-power, but much better.

Re: My first Savage 99
It just happen to have a partial box of the 90 grain Sierras I've been shooting in my bolt gun. I'll give them a try once I get my reciever sight mounted. I don't know much about Savage rifles yet. Where does the EG stand in the lineup? Is it considered a desirable variant or does model designation ...

Re: My first Savage 99
One of the reasons I wanted the rifle was to have some fun experimenting with various loads. From my reading in the net it seems some guns with the 1-14 twist shoot heavier bullets and some don't. My Model 70 does not. Is there a decent deer bullet in the 87 grain class? I suppose I can find a cast ...

It appears someone cut the stock an inch or so. How much trouble and expense to replace the old recoil pad with a new solid pad and buttplate?

I will have my son show me how to post pictures tomorrow. I really like the shape its in. It looks good, but not too good to use. Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do with the recoil pad?

My first Savage 99
Yesterday at the gunshow in Tulsa, I picked up my first 99. A previous owner had installed a recoil pad and sling swivels taking it out of the collector class and into my price range. It was manufactured in 1948 and is chambered for .250-3000. I also bought a period Lyman reciever sight for it. (The...

Re: 25-35 reloading
Old Savage, do have one of the last model 94s? I have a Trail's End Hunter, and I have enjoyed it very much. For some reason my rifle is not particular about bullets but only seems to like only H-4895 powder. I shoot 75 grain Speer flat points and the Hornady 117 grain. I would recommend that powder...

Re: Gunsmiths to remove tang safety and rebounding hammer
Thanks for the replies. I have 2 Trails End Hunters I bought on a whim sight unseen. One 38-55 and one 25-35. They are both very accurate leverguns and fun to load for and shoot even if the quality is not what it once was. The latter one has misfired on occasion. Thanks again for the information and...

Gunsmiths to remove tang safety and rebounding hammer
I have read of some of you removing the tang safety and rebounding hammer from your recently manufactured Winchesters. I am considering the same operation on a couple of rifles. (I have had occasional misfires with one 94, and it seems that the hammer strike is very weak.) Who does that work, what d...

Pete44,
Would recommend going to a folding rear sight while I'm at it? It looks as if your 94 has the original rear sight on it?

Re: Tang sight for model 94 Trail's End?
Thanks for the info on your experience. I will try the sight with the one screw. I have never used a tang sight before. I thought that it would be useful for hunting with a cartridge such as the .38-55. Open sights for close range and the tang sight for longer shots. Would recommend it? John (dogwoo...

Re: Tang sight for model 94 Trail's End?
Thanks Griff and J.Miller. My rifle does have the much cursed tang safety, but despite that, it is very accurate lever gun and with handloads packs a considerable wallop. I will contact Midway about getting a a new Marbles tang sight. I know some of the tang sights require a gunsmith to drill and ta...

Tang sight for model 94 Trail's End?
I bought a couple Win. 94 Trail's End Hunter models in .38-55 and .25-35 just before production ended. The .25 has a Williams receiver sight that works just fine, but I would like to try a tang sight on the .38. I know Marbles makes a sight for the pistol gripped models of the rifle. Will the same s...

Re: What's the right jacketed bullet for .38-55 Trails End?
Thanks for the help. I won't need the loads until fall, so I will try some of Deering's .378s. I believe RL 7 would be a good powder to begin with. It works well with my remanufactured Winchester loads. If anyone needs a partial box of Hornady 220 grain .375s, I have a nearly full box I would be gla...

What's the right jacketed bullet for .38-55 Trails End?
I have a Win. 94 Trail's End Hunter. It is very accurate with factory loads and my handloads with .380 diameter cast bullets. I bought a box of Hornady 220 grain flat nose .375 diameter bullets, and my rifle will not stabilize them. I suspect the Winchester factory loads are .377 or .378. I pulled s...

Re: Savage 99 takedown
Thank you all for your input. I asked the owner today to let me shoot the rifle. I have a few old 87gr. Winchester factory loads which should give it a pretty good test. It is a 1915 model and has, I guess, a 1 in 14 twist. Does anyone have an idea how much it will cost to fit a front sight and prop...

Savage 99 takedown
I am considering a Savage 99 takedown in .250-3000. It is only a shooter as the barrel has been cut and the sights are gone. I have read several times that these guns can be inaccurate due to the takedown feature and that headspace cannot be corrected. Has anyone had any experience with these guns? ...
